I read through this a few years back. I found some solutions, implemented them, and I have no buffeting at all unless there is a big truck, semi, or gusting crosswind. Until maybe 85+ mph when a little shows up. But not till around 95 do I get any of notice on my own drive without those conditions.

I made some plexiglass wings, changed the mirrors, got a givi windscreen and use it at that EXACT setting. Top hole mounts, a spacer in the bottom screws. Windscreen height is about 7/8” from aligning the windscreen rails to the clamps at max height. I am 5’10”. It has lowered pegs and a low seat (because I ride 2up often and the extra visibility is nice for them), but I still don’t get buffering on the stock seat. Except take maybe a few mph off. Here’s a photo so you can see what I did.
I use both an XD3 aria helmet with the visor, and aria standard helmet. It doesn’t matter which I wear. View attachment 316696
Good info. What mirrors did you get?

The MRA Vario that came with my 2015 DL650 was much better than stock for reducing buffeting, but just wasn't working well enough for me. Moving the spoiler around made no significant difference. So I installed Aprilia Tuono mirrors (Amazon knock-offs) which made for a slight reduction in buffeting, but not much. Then I installed mirror extenders from Adventure Tech. That also helped reduce the buffeting, but it was still there. So I ordered a Givi Airflow screen and that made a significant improvement. As many others have noted, I found that the Airflow worked best in the lowest position. Buffeting was still there, but reduced to a tolerable level. On a whim I decided to remove the Tuono mirrors and reinstall OEM. That did it! Buffeting is almost completely eliminated, and I can move the Airflow up and down as required. I just completed a 500km round trip and buffeting was barely noticeable. The Tuono mirrors work for many folks, but not for me. I'm quite happy with my setup now - Givi Airflow windscreen, Adventure Tech mirror extenders and OEM mirrors.

Cheers!

What is the best windshield for the 650. I want to read your opinions. Thanks

I've got a bit of a problem with a ghost that loves to ride pillion on my strom, he's very fussy, never comes out with me on any of my other bikes Oh and he gets really scared if I go above 60mph. Even though I can't actually see him I know he is there and if I go above 60mph, he slaps hell out of my helmet until fillings rattle and my eyes bulge and he continues to slap me until I drop below 60mph, but I believe that this type of ghost stops riding pillion if a Givi Airflow screen is fitted so I intend to get one and ride solo.

Thank you for all the positive feedback about this screen and excuse my warped sense of humour.

I'm sure this was covered previously in the thread by someone — I picked up the idea somewhere here on the forum. I added longer bolts and ~1/2" spacers to the bottom mounts of my Givi Airflow's base screen. Substantially further reduced the buffeting, especially with the top portion of the screen in higher positions.

Just thought I'd throw in my $.02, though I'm pretty sure this angle has already been discussed to the moon...

I'm 5-11 with a 33 inch inseam, and I found out that I do much better with the stock windscreen on my 2nd Gen Adventure model in the lowest position, and with the deflector/spoiler thingy as low as it will go. As a matter of fact, I'm currently researching lower, "sport" windscreen options. I might even try to get my hands on a used, non-Adventure model windscreen and cut it down, just to see what happens.

You are on the right track! LOWER is the correct direction. Soon you will find turbulent-free bliss. Keep cutting the screen until the buffeting & turbulence are gone. Then...stop.

I did get my hands on a stock, 2nd Gen Adventure model windscreen a few months back with plans to cut it down, but I just keep soldering on in the lowest position waiting for the motivation to hit me. The only real problem I ever had was the fluttering of my adventure helmet visor, which I think is as much a symptom of my particular helmet {Scorpion EXO AT960) as it is my 'Strom's {2013 DL650A Adventure model) tendency for wind buffeting. I took the visor off the helmet and lowered the screen, and now there is no serious issue, and therefore I can't decide if it is worth all the trouble just to sport a flimsy helmet visor.

I have a 2014 and am 6'1" and could not ride with the stock screen. I tried mirror extenders and a Puig screen and added a generic deflector from China and that worked well enough for the past 12k miles but even with ear plugs the remaining buffeting has damaged my hearing. So I tried the 24" V Stream screen from National Cycle and now I can ride with my visor open and often forget to close it. Their is still slight buffeting and I may try different mirrors or some add on winglets if I get ambitious enough to make them or someone sells them. Looking thru the screen is less than ideal for off-road work so if I do any more BDRs I will put the Puig back on. But I can still see above the 24" screen 40 or 50' down the road, so fine for long distance stuff. What mirrors do you suggest to get that last bit of improvement? BTW, stock seat with Sit&Fly cover (a game changer), lowered pegs (another game changer), bars raised up and back approx an inch. New screen in highest position.

thanks
