Hi All,

What great resource this site is.

I bough a '12 650 last year as my midlife reconnect with riding and love it, with buffeting my only complaint.

Ordered a givi AF3101 and having access to a 3d printer i was thinking these deflectors would be a cool part to draw in solid works and 3d print. So am i the only nerd with a dl650 ? Or if i did the design and up uploaded the files here or to thingiverse would would they be of interest to others?

My guess is that if you produced a quality product vs. a homemade "hack", at the right price, then you would probably be able to sell them! I think the main challenges with them have been discussed in this thread, but my personal points of interest would be:

  1. How big are they? (Looks vs functionality)
  2. What fasteners are used - type and style, spacers, etc.
  3. Will they damage surrounding areas? E.g. what insulators would be necessary?
  4. What are they made of (aluminum, acrylic, etc.)?
  5. How much would they cost?

Agree points 1-3 - it has to be engineered well
As to what it would be made of. That would depend on what material YOUR printer can print in. Mine uses ABS plastic.
Cost? - I guess i was not clear. The "print" files are free downloads. If you have access to a 3d printer they cost a couple bucks in plastic to make.

Perry,

I did understand the intent of your previous post about providing the print files as free downloads - that is awesome. I guess I was just trying to hint around that you might be able to sell these as well, since you already have the necessary "tools".

Be sure to let us know how your deflectors turn out!

Here are some photos of the latest version of my standard size deflectors that strike a balance between functionality and appearance.

Made from laser-cut ABS and then bent in a mold I machined, I am making a few tweaks (waiting for the 50+mph winds here in boston to die back so I can get more realistic testing conditions), but should have them for sale soon.

I have also developed a prototype for a larger size of deflectors that do a slightly better job of blocking the wind, but they are much more difficult shape to bend as well as less "OEM" or discreet looking.

Well, I 'm still trying to improve the turbulence on my bike , I had, but I always think even better , and also aesthetically . Wear givi airflow , previously had the suzuki touring , plus spoilers deposit and also legs , I'm very comfortable, especially in winter , in summer will now dismount the spoilers of the legs, to give me air in the legs and go more chilly . : yes :: good :
Well now I'll try a hybrid, a cross between the givi Airflow and suzuki touring , what I did was remove the baffle dome suzuki touring and place on givi Airflow , I'll call , " The Airflow touring " : grin: , suzuki dome touring the home and had not used it , catching dust, then you better get some performance. : yes :: good :

And the pictures of my new " monster " , my dome mix of touring and suzuki givi airflow , looks good aesthetically , and facet in practice , can not say much , since both came out to try a new helmet , the X-01 tourer givi , but did not notice much difference , maybe better, I did not notice turmoil , despite the helmet visor . There go some pictures of how it is. : yes :: ok :
And while I also put some pictures of inventions for the legs and the air tank , the famous deflectors , mine, : descojono : I hear, noticeable ...... ....... go ..... if you notice . : ok :
My new dome , " Airflow touring"

Buffeting.

Last year I bought a 2012 650 Adventure that was a year old. Unfortunately the previous owner removed the adventure windshield and gave it away and buffeting is a problem. I installed the smaller mirrors and that helped quite a bit. But I would still like to install the adventure windshield with the laminar lip. After reading about many of you trying many different windshields, I wondered what you did with the ones you replaced.
So does anybody have the 2012 adventure windshield with the laminar lip that they would like to sell?
I am in Southern California, so that would make it easy if I could pick it up directly. If it is in any other state it would have to be after June 8th as I'm off to Asia for five weeks on the 4th May. I will of course be renting a bike there, it will probably be a Ninja just to swan around for day trips on it. My other bike is a Ninja 300.
Thanks guys.

That's the error I have commited. Windshield with laminar lip - no buffeting but horrible wind noise introduced, unbearable even with ear plugs, then got Puig tall screen, no noise at all but terrible buffeting. And both new screens with Aprilia Tuono mirrors on extenders. Finally settled with Givi Airflow. No buffeting and no any kind of noise. I wish I've had not spent money on two other screens, but what can I do now. At least, I have a great screen now.

Buffeting.

Thanks bosnjo. I believe I have a stock windshield and my friend has the adventure deal. We have switched bikes and he was shocked how windy mine was, and I was shocked at how quiet his was with stock mirrors and no extenders.....go figure! I have extenders and the Aprilia mirrors.
I guess we all keep searching and trying to find what works for us. I did try one after market windshield, but it didn't do anything, fortunately they had a 30 day
return policy.

Here is my latest design of deflectors, Today I began production of the first batch to be sold.

The deflectors are made from ABS plastic with neoprene bumpers. I have put over 1000 miles on my many prototype deflectors and have tested them with the stock windshield, no windshield, and with a madstad 22in adventure shield and bracket in many positions.

They difference in comfort has been huge for me, and my girlfriend riding pillion agrees.

Mimo - what are you asking for the deflectors, including US shipping?

BTW, love the polka-dots! I wouldn't do it to mine, but about the most unique paint I've seen on a V-strom!

Hi G-Dub,

Expect to see a post in the Inventors/Group-buy forum by this Sunday, and don't worry, US shipping will be fast and free.

Thanks for the compliments on the spots, they are actually green vinyl circles applied over the standard pearl white paint.

What a dumb rule that you must have 20 posts. Just make 20 useless posts to 20 random threads and further clog things up.
I started to do just that, when I read a post that stated I could be banned for posting just to boost the number of posts up. :fineprint:
Don't worry, the longer you are on this forum you will discover that there are many more ridiculous rules you will come across :headbang:

I ordered a set of these and got them in a couple of days. They are a good quality and have a nice production look to them. They blend in very nicely with my black and dark grey bike. (Will try to get a pic up later.) I took my first ride with them this evening. Unbelievable. These simple deflectors have virtually eliminated the wind I had coming up that channel in the fairing and hitting my torso. They seem to work at pretty much any speed (at least up to 92 mph indicated). It's hard to see them while riding, but when I did glance at them, they seemed very steady without much vibration or flutter. Pretty much the only wind I get now is side wind gusts and some hitting the sides of my body coming off the windscreen, mainly between the grips and mirrors. (Thinking that hand guards might help this?) I can't promise everyone will have the same results, but based on my experience I highly recommend them. Suzuki could learn a thing or two from these for future versions of the V-Strom.

For reference, I'm around 6'2" and my bike has a Givi Airflow windscreen set on the top mounting holes with the upper screen adjusted about halfway, Aprilia mirrors and extenders.
