I rode about 75 miles today with the air flow in the lowest position at highway speeds. And it seems traffic really has a lot to do with how much turbulence I get. If the cars are far ahead of me then it's not near as bad if I'm 2 seconds behind. I brought my MRA vario and madstad. Might switch it over and try it tilted all the way back.

Thoughts on this issue

I've got about 6,000 miles on my 2012 now. This buffeting thing is a real pain. On my 1st ride home from the dealership it was apparent - a couple times I got hit with a buzzing vibration that shook my whole helmet and blurred my vision pretty bad. treid all the variations of the stock windsheild before tossing it. I bought a Cal sci windsheild, and played around with that a lot too. It's better than stock, and it's big too. Too big. I still get enough air on all but the hottest days. next I bought mirror extenders, and I thought that helped, but I've never been able to get rid of it completely. Of course , speeds slower than 50 mph are fine, and I notice far less buffeting when the road is clear of traffic in front of me. It's worse with a big suv in front.

I move my left hand around to different spots to feel the airflow- around the edges of the windshield it's turbulent, out far the air is clean and smooth, and behind the windshield is fairly quiet. My head sits right at the turbulent part of the airflow. I don't want to raise the windshield, or get a bigger one. I don't want to buy anything that isn't going to work. I might go for a smaller one to get more into the clear air.

I wear a shoei Helmet, an RF1100. Nice helmet. I bought it mostly looking for a quiet helmet , and it's pretty good with the face shield down all the way closed. I like to ride with the visor at about 3/4 way open (like where a dirt bike visor would be) got the dark tinted one and wear sunglasses, and that works pretty good when the sun is low in the sky.

Lately on the last couple of rides I put the visor completely down- it was quiet- and the buffeting was gone! I could still hear turbulent air going around the helmet, but it's just there, not loud. And my head not getting bounced around at all, just smooth. I guess for now, under 50 I'll ride with it open , and over it's just going to have to be shut. trouble is I always seem to be in that spot that is on the line between :)

This is my 1st bike with a windshield, all others have been dirt bikes or older street bikes.

I didn't have too much to complain about with the stock shield on my 2012, but I felt that I might like a little more airflow so I cut the screen down some with a Dremel. That didn't turn out well, the screen looked pretty good but the windblast coming off the front of the bike was deafening. I always wear earplugs, and any speed over 70 mph gave me a killer headache. So I ordered a CalSci Shorty tinted shield.

First impression, it was better but over 40 mph I was getting a lot of buffeting. The airflow seemed to hit me right at eye level. That was with the screen in the lowest position. So I raised it up to the highest spot, and took it out again.

Nirvana! No buffeting, no wind roar, and it looks cool all tinted dark. :hurray:

Thanks guys at CalSci!

That looks really nice, fits the lines of the bike well and I like how it is wider at the bottom, that's where I'm getting some wind blast around the side of my MRA Vario. I'm your height as well...

Nice and clean...

This really helps... for me anyways :)

Hi again. Quite a few pages back I described cutting a small measuring jug in half and sticking it to the fairing with duct tape... which helped a lot with noise and buffeting and wind pressure/turbulence around your torso... but looked like cr@p.

(For those who don't believe me... duct tape a tennis ball or something about that size (a wad of newspaper even) in this channel and go for a ride to see for yourself. It really is uncanny.)

So this weekend I found some spare time (and/or... some chores I was avoiding :fineprint:) so I made these.

Which I think look a little better... and work a treat! When I next find the time I might try make them somewhat smaller... but I think they look OK.

If anyone wants the 'blow by blow' picture guide on how to make your own, let me know. Yes they are installed along with the GIVI AF3101 which helped quite a bit but not entirely... (MRA Vario will be up for sale soon)... and now I can actually adjust the AirFlow's height depending on the speed I'm doing (or the length of the ride).

IMHO - this channel in the fairing is somewhat of a design flaw on the Glee (aerodynamically speaking ) and a source of much of the problem. But this is a permanent fix for me.

The noise level now, using my new Sparx Octane helmet (thanks for the tip BYRONW ) is absolutely fantastic. Highway speeds visor up or down, no earplugs (for testing purposes only)... all tolerable. Loving the sound of the Glee-Twin... and often find myself entering corners a little quicker than anticipated because I don't realise my speed 'cos everything's so quiet :jawdrop:). I've learned how well my Glee corners now too...

My Shark flip face is still a bit noisy... and I can see that now it's the hand-guards causing the noisy air up between my shoulder and helmet... so they're next to go if it bothers me too much. Earplugs solve that issue anyways and I don't want chilly air on my hands :mod2_no:

With my new 'deflectors'... I'm once again quite besotted with my choice of bike and spend a lot less time oggling bike ads... and MUCH more time exploring the farkles!!!!

:hurray:

Felicitaciones, queda muy bien, me alegra de que entre todos consigamos hacer esta maravillosa moto, mas confortable, yo tengo los deflectores tambien colocados a la altura de las piernas, y se va muy cĂłmodo, un saludo.

Pictures please

I came to the same conclusion just the other day. Cruising down the feeway at about 70 mph I started moving my hand around and discovered if I blocked the air in this area, the buffeting and noise diminished. Was even starting to design something along the same lines.

Nice work. I for one would love to see how you shaped these.

Madstad Windshield

Installed the Madstad kit today with the light grey windshield. Seems very adjustable/stable and goes on easily. Quality appears top notch. No I am not worried about the metal in case of an accident as it is smooth surfaced and the edges feel rolled. I will let you know what I think about the wind protection after I get a few hundred miles on it.

I like mine. My bike came with the Givi 260, which was too tall for my little torso. I mean it worked well, but I had to look through it. The Euro sport was a little too short, but the Adventure shield with the bracket gives me lots of adjustability options. I can make it lowe enough to see way over it or high enough to where I'd have to look through it. I went with the dark tint and I like it.

I have about 350 miles on a new Givi Airflow adjustable screen and couldn't be happier with it. Works better than stock even without the second portion of the screen installed. And provides great protection and quiet in various positions for me at 6'3" with a modular HJC helmet. It's a keeper.

I have decided the stock 2012+ is not bad. I put it in the lowest position and I don't get much in the way of buffeting. It is a bit loud but I use ear plugs and it is pretty good. I find it a lot better than the 07 with madstad bracket and Calsci shorty.

I like the Givi and may try it as the temps drop.

Are people having these problems with the stock shield on the adventure?

Here I am trying to get more wind in my face to cool me down in the absurd phoenix heat. I've not had any extreme buffeting at any speed. I've fiddled with the lip on the top of the screen and found the pushing it all the way down into the lowest position with the windscreen in the middle position gives me a wonderful face full of wind. I'm keeping my face shield up at highway speeds and loving it.

Is it only the screen on the standard model or was it just that I've been broken in and buffeting no longer effects me in a negative manner. My last ride was so extreme when I first got it I was afraid I'd get blown right off if I went over 65.
