Throttle sticking a bit; How to lube?

Hi. My 2009 DL650 has never had its throttle lubed at all, and never seemed to need it.

Recently, it revved up to about 5,000 rpm as I squeezed the clutch coming to a stop (I had let the throttle grip go). I manually returned it to idle. Now I find that if I hold the clutch at a stop and rev the throttle and let it go, it returns almost to idle, settling at 1,500 rpm rather than the normal 1,250. It also feels like it's binding as I accelerate from a stop.

What steps should I take to lubricate the things I ought to lubricate to deal with this?

It's unlikely a lubrication problem. See if you can determine what is causing it to hang. The return spring is strong enough it should have no problem returning completely. Don't lubricate the throttle cables in any case. They are Teflon lined.

I found there was a patch of rust on the handlebar end inside the throttle grip tube that was slightly binding on mine. I cleaned it off with some fine wet n dry emery and gave it a good polish as well as cleaning out the grit from inside the tube. Much nicer!

I should mention that when the throttle hangs up at 1,500 on return, if I give it a final manual nudge it returns fully to normal 1,250 idle.

I don't know anything about disassembling or reassembling the throttle grip area ... Is it something that can be explained, or do you know of a tutorial on this anywhere?

Take the wind/hand guard off first. Take the bar end weight off next (don't undo the screw all the way, just loosen it and then work the weight back and forth while pulling to work it out of the bar). There's two screws on the switch block. Just pay attention when you take them out as one is longer than the other. Slide the assembly off and make sure there's no crud on the bar (buff with some cut-n-polish to clean it up, you want it smooooooooth) or in the tube. When you reassemble make sure the locating peg sits in the hole in the underside of the bar.

A dry lube is OK---graphite powder, for example. Nothing wet that will hold dust. Also check for a warped plastic throttle tube.

Check the adjustment of the throttle cables. Adjust the pull-open cable first to get the slack you like...I like as close to none as I can get. Adjust the pull-closed cable last. If this is too tight it'll hold the throttle open.

Mine did the same thing as well and it was the butterflys in the injectors gummed up with varnish. Some carb cleaner dissolved it and made it work like new. Just take tank off and remove ail filter and see if yours is the same, open throttle and give a good spraying of carb cleaner. My auto has done the same thing.

Yea check the bar end weight and the throttle tube. Make sure the bar end does not interfere with the grip movement at all! My XR650L got cruddy under the throttle tube once and I cleaned it like people said above and all was well. Like Greywolf said don't lube the cables! Hmmm...haven't heard the butterfly crud story...now I have something else to check I guess...
