Starter spins motor, no crank.

The starter turns engine. But, no start. Replaced battery (old battery had low voltage, tested and bad cell) . Fuses appear good. Will pull fuel tank and check for spark at plugs. Any other suggestions?

The bike started fine. Got about 2 blocks and the engine died. Starter was turning motor over, just not starting engine.

The Gen 1 DL650 had a separate kill switch and starter button. On those bikes it is possible to turn the engine over with the kill switch turned off.

Check your kill switch.
This is not accurate, at least for my own '06. The starter will not turn with the kill switch set to the 'stop' position. If you can hear the fuel pump prime, the kill switch is not a factor.

My bet is that the tipover sensor is either not secured in place or is not in the correct orientation, probably happened during the battery swap as it's right near the battery box. You can get positive confirmation of tripped TOS by putting the ECU in dealer mode, it would show code C23.

If that's not the culprit, continue on to confirm you have fuel, spark, and air.

It was raining that day. After it died... my first action was to test the battery. It initially had 12.7v. When I turned the key on- it dropped to 8v. I pulled the battery and took it to get tested at auto parts store. It showed bad battery on computer. I exchanged it - hoping that was the culprit. After reinstall, it cranks the motor without starting. I thought maybe the rain might have something to it...

If the tip over is out of place the bike will start and run for a second then it will cut out, it will do that over and over again.

Do you hear the fuel pump prime each time you turn the ignition on ?

When you do get around to inspecting the connectors, do remember to include the connector at the end of the lead from the stator cover that is from the crankshaft position sensor.

Ok, update...
Put into Dealer Mode and pulled a C23 code. Bike has never been laid down... pulled the TOP and shook it and reinstalled. Upon reinstall- tried to start the bike and suddenly no power, no lights on dash. Pulling the tank now to go farther down the rabbit hole. I pulled the TOP sensor and reinstalled a second time with "UP" facing up - jiggled the wiring around that area... no power. Checked fuses- all good. Going to check that green wire that was mentioned...

You also need to check the ground wires in the big plug.

Bridge the 2 big terminals on the starter solenoid were the main 30a fuse is, the bike should crank (it will not start) that will test the battery and connections including the battery ground.

Update: I charged the battery, reinstalled. No error codes in dealer mode. The bike cranks (still no start). Pulled the tank and top sparkplug to check if its igniting. Consistent spark noted when cranking engine with starter. fuel supply related issue...? I did a thorough visual inspection of the wiring and connections (nothing visually evident of loose or bad wiring). Fuses all look okay. Next step, I will test the fuel pump relay... if good, I will check power at Fuel pump. suggestions??

@thadscottmoore, FWIW, you can leave your bike in dealer mode until you are happy that everything is working or you can ride it indealer mode to see whether any further / other dealer mode codes are displayed.

Have you sorted the C23 code that you reported in reply #19? I will look at replacing the fuel tank hatch seal too.
Unless your drain pipe is plugged, the seal shouldn't make much difference. The tank has a raised lip. My seal has been bad for years with no extra water in the tank. If the drain gets plugged though, then it's a different story.

Try pouring some water around the tank opening and make sure it drains quickly.

As far as the hatch seal - I did just replace mine with a Honda seal: Honda part# 17525-300-000. If you want to do it, I'm happy to give better instructions. Actually, maybe I'll post it here.

Glad you figured it out. It might not hurt to add some HEET to grab any lingering moisture in the far recesses of the tank.

In addition to the tank seal, be sure to check that the drain hole is clear. You can blast that out with parts cleaner to be sure. If you park under trees normally, suggest moving the bike out from under them.

2014 650 V Strom: I've had that problem twice. 230 KLX once. Friend with Yamaha Tenere once. We think it is ethanol gas collecting water after sitting 3 or 4 weeks. We had to hold starter long enough to push water through injectors before starting. They ran fine after a few minutes of running. Try Stabil for ethanol gas if it will sit over a few days and it should help.
