And it works!

So I managed to get it to work. I used some tubing, Seal All and a special tool I found at the hardware store. It actually all worked out almost too easy. This is where I hold my breath...

Anyways, I put described it on my blog, and shall put the link here:

the path less traveled: August 2011

Anyways, once again for the sage advice and direction!

runs rough after filling up

i think i am having the same problem - i have had my bike since new 08 with abs, never had any problems and i have 29,000 now.

just recently i changed my tires (front and rear) and after that i noticed that after filling up with gas it would run like it was on one cylinder for about 20 or 30 miles then it would run normal until i filled up again, i though i was going crazy because i knew there was no way that changing tires would cause a engine problem.

anyway how do i know if my bike is the cali model and does anyone have a picture of what the fuel vapor /seperator looks like on a good bike?

any help is greatly appericated. :hurray:

You can see it between the frame and side cover. The emissions sticker will say California on it.

thank you grey wolf for the quick response - it seems i dont have the cali model. but still have the problem. so on the non-cal model does it still have the fuel/vapor seperator and breathe pipe and are they seperate hoses at the bottom of the tank?

I'm gonna get an inspection camera this week and see if anything is disconnected inside the tank. :headbang:

A bike without a canister breathes through the filler cap.

well i got a inspection camera from costco and could not find anything disconnected or torn. for now i'm just filling the tank until i can see the gas (about 3 gallons) means i have to fill up twice a week but that will work for now. up for any suggestions

I think this is the Fix for the problem

the problem i had with my 08' WEE gave the same Symptoms as what you guys are describing.

I use to fill my bike all the way up (for two 1/2 years) and had no probems running - works perfect.

then a while ago after filling up on a friday night the bike sat all weekend, when i went to go to work on Monday morning the bike started but sounded like it was running on one cylinder. i was able to get it going down the road but it was still running rough for the first few miles. then it cleared up and ran fine the rest of the week, i though it was bad gas that caused it so i added seafoam to the rest of the tank. all was well until i filled the tank again. same problem came back although this time the starter would not crank all the way over. I though the battery was dead, checked battery it was ok. i belive gas had gone down the vapor recovery system and filled one of the cylinders with gas... i started filling the tank almost 3/4 full and was not having any more problems. but if i filled it all the way the problem would come back.

My fix for the problem was to remove a inline device (looks like a filter - think it called the fuel shutoff) from the vapor recover line between the gas tank and the carbon filter/vapor recovery canister on the right side of the bike.

I too the "filter" and filled the top end "the end the tank hose connected to" and put a little expoy to fill the hole. that was if this didnt work i could always drill out the little bit of epoxy out and the "filter" would be fine.

Well I am Thrilled to say my problems are GONE!!

I can fill the bike all the way up leave it sit for days and NO PROBLEMS...

I believe this may be the problem with many V-Stroms and it stems from the vapor recovery assy inside the gas tank

any body need additional info on the Fix give me a shout. or email me at

Those symptoms can indicate a broken vent tube inside the tank.

Same issue

I'm new to the forum but I'm already impressed! The breadth of issues discussed here is great! I recently took my 09 wee in for new tires and as I was putting it up on the truck, I noticed it was running very roughly and there was the smell of gas. I didn't think too much of it at the time since it was the first occurrence but later I got a call from my mechanic that there was an issue with fuel leaking out of that breather tube. His thought was to do as MrFixit did. I'm a little uncomfortable with bypassing all of that so I was resigned to replacing the gas tank until I saw pdxryder's post. We're going to remove the tank and see if we can try his fix. Hopefully, it will be that easy. He admits he wouldn't have thought of that so kudos for you guys and your ingenuity!

Vapor surge when opening the fuel cap.

Hello, guys,

Sorry for being a bit off-topic, but I see you understand a lot of these fuel issues, so... would you take a look at my problem at v-strom-service-maintenance-questions-discussions/426457-mystery-internal-fuel-tank-pressure.html?

From some time now, there is vapor accumulation inside the tank, and I get a (sometimes strong) relief every time I open the gas cap. My bike does have a canister.

Suzuki mechanics are at a loss. No help for me there...

Any insights would be deeply apreciated!
