Hello All. New to me 2019. i Am 5’9”. Lots of Moto experience. Generally prefer clean air of a naked over turbulence or being behind a large scree. My first ride on my 2019 was the worst head shaking, eye rattling, ear splitting turbulence I have ever experienced on a Moto. So bad in fact that after trying all 3 positions I simply took the screen off( which proved the best) and proceeded home. I then cut the screen to minimize the buffeting. Mind you I enjoy a little wind and clean air much much more than being behind a large screen. See pics for some idea. Really happy with the result.

This buffeting is really ruining my experience. I've owned the bike ('18 650 XT) about a month. It had a Puig adjustable windscreen installed, and the stock screen came with it. I've rode about 700 miles and the dirty air I'm getting from the Puig is unbearable. I've tried ducking my head a little, and put my hand in every possible place the wind is coming from to see if it helps. I saw some improvement, but nothing great.

So this weekend, I decided to put the stock screen back on. It's 5" shorter and 3" narrower than the Puig but it's so much better for me. I get a face full of air, but it's clean - no air pockets, no swirling, and not buffeting. It was so refreshing to ride without the dirty air. And if I duck my head down about 3", it is absolutely perfect - zero air in my face and literally no turbulence. If I could get the stock screen but 3" taller, I'd be in heaven.

I'm going to put the Puig back on (since it's taller) and put spacers between the mount and screen to see if that gap helps alleviate the turbulence. Fingers crossed. If not, I'll buy either the Givi AF3112 or Madstad 22".

I just ordered this to see if I could use it to lower the stock windscreen, but it's actual use looks to be to raise it higher than the stock mounts. Might be worth a shot in your case

Good luck with your fix!

I solved the buffetting problem as described.

I'm solving the "marginal 2-up comfort" problem, by raising the windshield and replacing everything under it with a 2015 Yamaha FJR 1300ES.

I kid! I'm sure there are couples who can comfortably tour on a 2017+ DL650, we're just not one of them.

Thanks. Maybe I'll give those a try.

I put the Puig back, this time with 1/4" spacers on the top and bottom bolts. No significant difference. Then I took out the top spacers & kept the bottom in (for a more angled approach. There was a slight improvement.

The shape of the Puig directs the air right between the hang guards and mirror, up my arms, and into the bottom of my helmet. So now I'm fabbing up some kydex wind deflectors to see if that helps redirect the wind.

The homemade deflectors were an improvement but atill not as good as the factory screen when I duck down a little. And at 75 mph, I really felt like those "flaps" caused noticeable drag and effected the way the bike handled. Can't be having any of that.

Maybe I'll get those brackets Static linked above a try. Hate throwing good money at a bad problem, but I have to get this ironed out.

Due51, why not give my deflectors a try before you keep going on the path you have been on? They work as DesertBike can attest to.

The problem is not the air off of the screen or the mirrors, it is the air off of body work. The deflectors need to be down there to alleviate the buffeting.

Exactly what I would suggest.

My Jhat deflectors are about 11% larger than his original design, but I can't feel any additional drag or effects on handling on the highway (or anywhere really).

I'm sure there is some additional drag, but any penalty in fuel economy is vastly outweighed by the fact I can actually stand to be on the highway now.

If I'm reading post 340 correctly, you have a Givi Windscreen (AF3112, I'm guessing) and Aprilia style mirrors. I don't have either of those. I'm still making my way through the entire thread.

Due51, I have run the deflectors with the standard windscreen and mirrors, they still work to significantly reduce the buffeting. For me, it is just better with the Givi windscreen and the Aprilia mirrors than without. Without the deflectors, the Givi windscreen and Aprilia mirrors did not fix the issue to any significant degree as compared to having the deflectors on. Like I said in the post, I have no buffeting of any kind coming from the bike with my setup.

Thanks JHat.

I mocked up a couple blanks made from Kydex I had lying around, using your template from the other thread. I'll put the bends in tomorrow.

Did you use velcro to attach the deflectors to the faring?

Is this just an issue with the DL650? or also with the 1050XT? I was considering the 1050XT but if its also a big buffeting issue, that is concerning.
It is so subjective due to the many variables of each rider and bike. I'm 6'3" on a 650 XT with stock mirrors, hand guards, and a tank bag*. My Puig screen causes lots of turbulence, but I read somewhere in the thread that another rider has a Puig and his buffeting problems are nil. My stock screen is much better than the Puig, but because of my height, it isn't perfect. But for someone shorter, or narrower, or without a tank bag, or after market mirrors/handguards, or the AdventureTech externders, maybe the stock screen is perfect.

*I took the tank bag off and noticed a slight improvement in buffeting. 🤷‍♂️

So I fabbed up a pair of @Jhat wind deflectors, molded them with a heat gun, and attached them to the faring with velcro.

Set up & results:
1) Puig + deflectors = slightly better than before but still too much dirty air

2) Stock screen + deflectors + 1/4" spacer on bottom bolts = a face full of clean air but no turbulence

3) Stock screen + deflectors - spacers = about the same as 2

4) Stock screen + deflectors + the Puig clamped to the stock screen to give me another 5-6" of screen height = probably as good as it's gonna get unless I buy a Givi or Madstad.

Due51, you have figured out the buffeting which is the worst part, now it is more of a comfort thing on where you go from here. Some like the smooth blast to the head, I do not. Others prefer a calmer bubble of air for the helmet to sit in which is my preference. I like to be able to look around and not have the wind try to move my head back as I turn my head. The Givi Airflow provides that quiet pocket of air for my head without making a large hot bubble of air that my body is sitting in. Everyone is different but I do not thing anyone likes the buffeting that is common with the stock setup.

I ordered a pair of the stock screen risers linked by Static but they take a while to arrive. So while I'm on vacation, I also ordered a Givi AF3112. Hopefully both will arrive by the time I get home so I can get this whole thing solved and behind me.

When I got home from vacation last night, a Givi AF3112 and AdventureTech mirror extenders were waiting for me. Despite putting 14 hours and 865 miles in from Wilmington NC to Auburn Hills Michigan, I had to put them on when I got home.

I took a 150 mile rip today and the Givi windscreen is absolutely the answer. It was about as perfect as I'm gonna get, and it's good enough for me.

The bike is running great, though the damn harmonic buzz is back from the Givi crash bars. I'll have to shave down the spacer again.
