Hi All,

separate forum for the newbies to the site and to the bike. I've seen many threads where some of the old-timers (and even moderators?) get irritated with a newbie that comes on with a question that has been repeated and covered numerous times, but in some cases the newbie hasn't done an adequate search or didn't find quite the information they were looking for. If these questions are situated in the "newbie" forum, those irritated by repeat posts or the same newbie questions over and over again can easily avoid them, and those that like to "educate" :wink:newbies can feel free to participate. What do the rest of you think?

I have never seen anyone here get "irritated" with repeated questions. This concerns me, can you give me an example? As far as the "newbies" goes, we have the Stromtroopers intro section.

I don't feel comfortable with adding any more forums, or sub-forums. We have way too many right now.

With that noted, I am glad you are here and I appreciate your excellent ideas-suggestion.

The Vee vs. Wee question can get annoying in a "here we go again" kind of way. Of course everyone's been civil about it....except those other guys. :devil_16:

 

For what my two cents is worth - I'd recommend not going with a separate forum - not only for maintenance / management issues as Howboucha suggests but also, from my experience, "labelling" such as this diminishes participation overall (using my Ham Radio experience as a forum moderator as an example). Most respondents on this site I think are pretty decent types who don't mind answering the same question a few times if need be, and the search function works well in my opinion. Use it first, and if not what you're looking for, ask - for every sarcastic reply there will be 10 good answers - kind of like real life, I find.

I fell like I can speak to this. I'm now an experienced newbie. I've now got over 15,000km on a Vstrom 1000 I purchased new in September 2007. This forum has been most helpful in many ways, and I read so many threads that my wife says I'm obsessed. No doubt I've asked some dumb questions and posted some answers clearly obvious and overly simple for the taste of some members. Tough. Today's newbie may become tomorrow's well informed rider.
My point is ............ I suggest newbies and seniors stick together in this forum and share what they know.

That's a good point. This board takes it pretty easy on newbies and non-searchers, which is great because no one is perfect.

 

No cause for great concern...

Golly, it was back in March that I originally posted this...I really don't remember the specific thread that prompted it. Suffice it to say, from time to time I have seen a few folks get a bit cantankerous with newbies that bring up a topic that has been covered ad nauseum in many other threads on the site...and perhaps the newbie hasn't mastered the use of the search function.

In any case, I don't think its cause for great concern, because an overwhelming majority of posters are very understanding and patient. I have gone back and looked and found the newbie introduction forum...I had originally thought that this was just a spot to introduce yourselves as new to the board...but I see it can also serve as a place for newbie issues and questions.

 

I've seen a lot of annoyance at times. EXCELLENT SUGGESTION!

 

Okay, here is an "annoying response".

I need to see the threads. Posting generalities without pointing me to the issue doesn't help me take care of the problem.

To make unfounded comments does nothing positive for the cause. Show the problem, and I will fix it.

It's not a complaint or a problem, just an observation.
You seem to have this idea that I'm some kind of chronic complainer, but I think you're mistaking my tone completely.
I just thought it would be a good idea to have an area where someone who is new could go and post what they know is a "newbie" question, and those that are willing to help could answer.
Now that I typed it, it seems that could be done anywhere on the forum, so maybe it's not needed. We have a few people on here that are excellent about answering the same questions day in and day out... Greywolf, for example. I do remember some people at times answering posts in a short way, like "have you ever heard of using the search function". I can't point to anything in particular, but I've seen it in the past. I don't see it as a problem with the site. In general, people here are really helpful.
Maybe some kind of V-strom specific FAQ would be a better alternative. You know, a document listing all the most common newbie type questions and common answers.
