Lifespan of the DL650 Engine?

Can I buy a higher mileage DL650 (2004-2006) without any concerns?
I have been looking at DL650s with 40-50k miles.

Of course it is always a matter of how the owner maintained the Strom. Not always possible to find out. Are the 650s a generally speaking tough and reliable engine? What about other parts such as suspension and electrical gremlins?

My 2006 DL650 had over 202,000 km (over 125,500 miles) when I retired it; last I checked it still ran fine. RCACS has over 260,000 km (over 161,500 miles) on his. I think he just changed the cam chain tensioner.

(My 2012 has about 113,000 km or over 70,000 miles.)

I just bought an 06 with 85000 km's (53000 miles) that runs like a top and has plenty of jam. Its a Suzuki. I had an old GS 550 with over 150000 hard driven km's (learner bike) that I sold 10 years ago that is still running and on the road today for what that is worth...

I wouldn't worry much about the engine itself (assuming proper care and maintenance), but there are some other parts that need to be maintained that a lot of people neglect:

- Suspension (at 40-50K the OE equipment is done. They bike will ride poorly if it has never been serviced/replaced).
- Bearings (at this mileage, it's time to replace some and service others - wheels, sprocket carrier, swingarm).
- Brakes (when was the brake fluid replaced, calipers inspected, etc.).
- Battery/charging/electrical system (have the battery and/or stator been replaced? When? What electrical accessories does it have and are they working properly).

If this bike you are looking for is in Germany, keep in mind that most owners do not have a home shop/garage, so all maintenance has to be done by a dealer ($$$). This is good, because it means there should be a paper trail to prove the maintenance took place or not good if it wasn't done and you have to take it to the dealer and pay for it...

I heard a rumour that there was a DL650 engine powering the Antikythera Mechanism which would have still been running fine had it not been left sitting in salt water.

I'm kidding about that of course, but seriously if you keep up the regular maintenance they just keep going and going. 60K miles? If it's had the servicing done it should be no problem.

I asked this in another way in another thread, but apparently no one can report on anyone actually wearing out either a 650 or 1000. Mine (well maintained) is approaching 50k with no signs of wear. Based on the above comments, it's just getting started. If I were to keep it, I would probably look into replacing bearings and bushings at 75k. Greywolf did his at 50k and reported no real wear, IIRC. Modern bikes are great if taken care of.

Most bikes in the US are sold off or crashed and totaled long before anyone gets close to wearing them out. Even if the engine blows up there's tons of cheap salvage motors out there.

A couple years back I read about a fella that has two DL650s something like a 2004 and a 2006. He rides one while the other is getting new tires and complete tune up. Goes back home for a couple of weeks to a month, drops off the bike he was riding, picks up the freshened up one and heads out again for a month or more. One bike had something like 230K miles and the other had something like 240K miles. I wish I could find the article.

1st. post for me, my 08' 650 has almost 62K miles and runs like brand new. Previous owner is a V-Strom nut and took very good care of it. He did all his own maintenance and said none of his bikes ever went to a dealer. He also gave me a very detailed spread sheet of all the maintenance he had ever preformed since he purchased the bike. I would say any of the V-Stroms if taken care of should go way past 100K miles easily.
