I am an import from the FZ-1 site. I am looking to trade for a V-Strom but I need som help talking myself into it. I love my FZ-1 and I am concerned that the v strom will not get up and go like the FZ. I really do not ride very fast on the top end but I do like the acceleration. Can someone tell me how the two stack up on acceleration. I am also concerned about tire life. I currently get about 8000 on a rear can that be done on dual sport tires? One last question I commute (100 miles a day) on my FZ, would the v strom be good for that? I do appreciate any help you can give.

Pretty sure the 4-inline will beat the twin-vee for accleration. But the DL1000 is hardly slow. If I had to do 100 miles daily, I'd take the Vee or Wee and never look back.

I am too fat for the wee but the Vee is looking better and better. I love the thought of taking one off road. I know the FZ is faster I guess i should have asked if the Strom will pass another car going sixty like it was standing still.

I traded in a ZZR1200 for my DL1000, and if performance is the issue, the ZZR was an animal--fastest thing I ever owned. I admit I still miss the raw power of that thing. But I gladly moved up to the DL1000 and never looked back. The Vee is plenty fast in terms of engine output, but not in the same league as the hyper-bikes. But here's the reality--its way faster than I usually need to go.

Here's the interesting part--I didn't relize the Strom would handle so well--my riding partners say if anything I might ride a bit faster on the Strom! I know my confidence level is slightly higher on the Strom. I lean with all the security I have ever felt on any bike, and that was totally unexpected from a 'dual sport'.

Comfort level, as in ability to ride hundreds of miles at a time--game, set, and match to the Strom.

The Vee is a "dual-sport" in name only. What the Vee is, is a light-weight road-bike...and by the gods, I do love mine! :D

On a "wet" bike, you've got about 400 lbs left before you hit the GVWR (or a little more, I forget the exact number). The rear spring is a little soft, so if you're going to be challenging that limit often, a new spring or at least some raising links will help you out.

The hydraulic preload on the rear is helpful in this situation too.

FWIW, in similar threads it has come out that many of us have loaded our bikes passed the GVWR with no apparent ill effects. I'm sure it increases tire wear and the possibility of overheating the tire leading to a blowout.

Have you ridden it off of the road? That is a main selling point with me. I do not want to use it as a dirt bike but I would like to tour forest service roads and dirt roads. I have a light sport touring bike in my FZ-1 but it will not ride well in the dirt.

Wee or Vee as Dirt Demon

The Vee or Wee do great on the road types you mentioned. It's just not a "trail Bike" though with some mods, people do trail with it. I personally wouldn't, but I do love turning down a dirt road when I see one I want to explore and my Wee performs wonderfully. It's also a great camping bike. Buy with confidence.

My 2 Cents

Speaking from experience . . . I have a DL1000 & FZ1. The DL has more low end power . . . but is a little top heavy. The DL will pick the front wheel up at will . . . The FZ1 needs to be coaxed. The FZ1 feels like a 600 . . . the DL feels like a 1000. The seating position of the DL takes all the weight off your hands . . . the FZ1 still puts some weight forward. I like the leg room on the DL better than the FZ1.

The DL has more than enough power . . . very impressive. Probably the best all-around bike I've owned.

I would consider trading my FZ1 for a DL650 for my son. Wouldn't want him riding the 140 hp FZ :)

Well I traded for a new 2008 DL 1000. Been riding it for a couple of days now (Still in break in) and I love it. This bike turns better than my FZ-1 did. Although i cannot take it over 5500 rpm I can tell the power will not be a problem. I do appreciate the advice all. I was looking at the Tiger, Ulysess and V Strom; I think I mad
