Let me preface this by saying that all this is at Interstate speeds (which unfortunately I tend to do a lot of) anything about 65mph just sucks.
The buffeting on this bike is just killing me. Mark from Madstad let me try an MP Touring screen to see if that would help but to my dismay in position 1 its worse then stock. I got beat up so bad that I had to sit down when I got home because I was so dizzy. Now it is a little windy today (about 15mph) but I shouldn't have to park the bike cause it's a little windy out. I'm going to try position 2 and see if I can work it out but so far I still get that annoying buzz around my helmet.
I bought the Windstrom (and lost my a$$ on it selling it) but I couldn't make it work in any position. I had it down to something managable then I changed jackets and the buffeting came right back (and it killed gas mileage), I tried the stocker in every conceivable spot and it's liveable but I still get this minor buzz that shakes my helmet just enough to make my eyes go out of focus and just enough to be annoying. Every once in awhile I'll hit some clean air and all is quite and calm then just a slight change in wind direction and it starts my head a buzzing.
A couple things I've been noticing. 1. I rode with no shield and it's super smooth at any speed, nice clean air but you get so much of it, it wants to push you over backwards at hwy speeds. I also noticed that it's very calm with no shield up to about 50mph then just as you get passed that a huge rush of wind comes over the top of the fairing and after 60mph it just wants to take you off the bike.
2. It's the sides of my helmet getting beat up, not the top. The air coming around the bike and from my legs is not very clean and contributes to a lot of the buffeting. If I hang my legs over the passenger pegs it cleans the air up A LOT! But it's hard to run the controls from way back there.
3. With the stock screen on if I lean forward about 6" towards the screen it's perfectly smooth, calm and quite and I'm still looking over the screen, but as you can imagine after a few minutes that isn't very comfortable anymore.
So I'm on my last leg, I'm begining to think this bike just wasn't made for a guy my size (5'8" 240lbs). I've tried the stock bracket, Madstad bracket, MP Shield, Stock Shield, Windstrom Manta and I can't get into clean smooth air that doesn't buzz my helmet. Oh yeah I've tried 3 different Helmets too, Shoei RF1000, KBC and HJCl, doesn't matter which one I wear.
So I'm going to see if you guys have any other suggestions, I do have a laminer lip coming as well that I got off eBay but I don't hold my hope for it. Anyone interested in a 3 week old DL650 with tons of farkles on it? Make you a good deal.
