Fuel Pump Question/Problem?

A buddy of mine who has a 2005 wee says he is hearing what sounds like the fuel pump as the engine is running. Says it sounds kind of like when you turn the key on and the fuel pump primes itself only more subdued.

Any of you guys/gals had this problem? Or know what it might be? He's got 70,000 miles on the bike and is afraid to take it to some rally's coming up...and has no time to take it to a shop right now. Thanks.

Interesting. So how long have you been hearing the fuel pump sound other than when turning the key on with the engine off?

The sound of the fuel pump running is, um, the sound of the fuel pump running. What's so wrong with the fuel pump running? The fuel pump not running is much worse.

Don't see the problem here...

One thing to keep in mind is that you'll hear all sorts of different sounds depending on how much gas is in the tank. For example, a lot of folks new to riding vintage bikes panic over strange sounds they hear when a nearly-empty tank amplifies every clink, clank, and clunk.

I suggest ear plugs.

Oh ok. Maybe it's not much to worry with or maybe it just takes a long time to finally bite the dust, the fuel pump that is? Apparantly my friend had not heard the sound before while riding the bike and is making it now. Anyway, thanks for the comments. I'll relay the info to my friend.

Your friend has a Strom with 70,000 miles and he doesn't post here?

Yeah, he's working all the time. Too much I think. I did a little more searching and sounds like suzuki put the fuel filter within the fuel pump and it's non changeable, correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, others have said that they think it's the fuel filter getting clogged that is almost always the problem. Maybe the pump is having to work harder with a clogged filter....thus the extra noise?

Yep, they are supposed to make a sound when you turn the key on but my friend says his still makes the sound while riding.

I hear the pump prime when it gets power before starting. After I start up the bike, the engine noise drowns it out. I can hear it if I put my ear to the tank. After riding a while it's loud enough that I hear it over the engine, while riding, and with my helmet on.

I read, like the OP, that many people believe a clogged filter will cause the noise. I did a fuel pump flow test just a couple days ago. It's supposed to flow 1200 ml in 30 seconds. Mine actually flowed a little more than that so my filter does not appear to be clogged.

This to me, says that the noise does not necessarily mean a clogged or dirty filter.

I've read over and over on these forums about all the various noises the bike makes, and I swear mine makes every single one of 'em. Like others, I've gotten to the point where I just don't worry about it as long as the bike seems to "run" fine.

That being said, I also bought a used gixxer fuel pump from eBay that can be used in my '03 1000 by swapping a few parts. I paid $30 shipped. That's vs $600-$700 new from the dealer. Cheap peace of mind.
