what was your most recent bike before you picked up your 650?

i'm currently on a VFR800 and worry about missing the power.

this posting from a PSP is pretty hard.

I added the Weee Strom to my ZX10 and KX250 family, it's a perfect blend for the middle ground between these 2 extreme monsters. I love it but it can never replace the other ends of the spectrum ie ZX10 for extreme street/track and KX250 for hardcore dirt performance.

My Wee Strom replaced a Kawasaki Vulcan. The Strom is much quicker and the handling in the twisties can't even be compared! But the Vulcan was so comfortable! I have been spending the last 6 months getting the Strom to fit me better, all I have left to do is get my Rick Mayer seat, and I'll be there.

KLR650...Before that was a long succession of experimentation that started about 15 years ago. 2003 HD Sportster 883, 1990 ZX-11, 1983 CX-650E, 1977 Kawi KH100, 1981 Yam Seca 550, 1978 Yam XS400.

I'd still like to augment the stable with a new KLX250S, if they make it into Canada. I've only heard that they are a 49 state model in the US. No word on whether or not they're coming to the GWN.

My first road bike was a 2001 SV650. Liked it, but it never felt right to me (too much dirt bike blood still moving around). Had my eye on the DL1000 but when the DL650 came out, I knew that was the bike. And after over 9,000 miles, I am very happy with it.

For commuting, touring, and general fun, I ride the DL. Four cruising back roads in warm weather, I ride the Adventurer. And for ripping it up off road, you can't beat a KTM.

1996 suzuki bandit - too buzzy and it was shagged after 50k miles
1999 Kawasaki zr750 - too heavy
2000 suzuki sv650 - nice but no dirt
2002 klr650 - nice but no sport
2004 honda ruckus - WHAT THE F*ck?!?
2004 kawasaki 250 - Light and fun under 50mph -
OK the last 2 were my wife's
2005- Just right for the roads full of frost heaves in New England its a keeper-light, sport, dirt, tour, 2 up.

Sarge! Whats up my man!!!

I had the Z1000 before the DL650. Well I still have the Z1000. I was really worried that the power wouldn't be enough for me coming from at bike like the Z1000 to the DL650. It has its positives and negatives.

Positives:
I tend to just do the speed limit or around there. The Z1000 just wants to go! I find mysef doing +90mph without really thinking about it. The DL650 is more then capable of doing +90mph, but it feels just right about 65-70mph, IMHO. Its great for commuting. Its fun to run the crap out of it, and still not really brake the point of insanity speeds. Its very easy to ride. The throttle is very polite and forgiving. The Vtwin motor is spunky and has decent lowend torque. Its light and nimble, it handles surprisingly well. It turns in more quickly then the Z1000 does, which makes twisties really fun.

Negatives:
The only time I really notice the lack of power is when I pass. I'm use to the Z1000 whipping your head back when you click down a few gears. The DL650 is vague in comparison. Two-up with full lugguage maybe a task for the little 650. I haven't tried it yet, it does two-up or lugguage okay though.

My only other bike was a 1982 Suzuki GS750T. The ol' girl was pretty good, I think - smooth and decent power, and fairly comfortable. But the DL is pretty much the same sense of power, only more torquey down low than the inline 4. And the power is beautifully smooth up into the higher revs were the GS would buzz and numb my thumbs. Coming from the old bike I find the brakes better, and Thank God - EFI!!! I hate carburetors, especially having 4 of them... And, fuel gage, two trip meters, a clock, dual high and low beams, big tank, etc etc etc.

I like the DL, and I like that it is a bit different. I'd say 90% of motorcyclists have either a cruiser or a sport bike. I didn't fit into either of those molds, hence my choice of the DL. It's weird, funny looking and incredibly useful, just like me! 8)

Well after heading over to this site owners house this weekend for a cookout...I think the DL650 is off my list. Not because it's not a worthy bike, but because I rode his DRZ400S...that thing rocks! I've not ridden on gravel roads much before, but this thing made it a breeze. Looks like a 2 bike garage might be in my future; the VFR for commuting and touring, and a DRZ for some non-pavement fun!
