Better fuel economy!

I need better fuel economy! I bought a 2003 dl1000 a month ago, and im averaging about 40mpg, driving it very lightly.. in other words not exceeding 4000 rpm. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to raise that? I cleaned the air filter so far, and that got me from 37 to 41 mpg. The previous owner said he had the bike remapped for better mid range torque, that is probably what is ruining my mileage.

Still a fun bike, and a perfect companion to the dr650, just sucks only going 190 miles before all the fuel bars disappear and flash..

Yeah, I think the remapping did you in. However, it probably runs MUCH better than my bike which is not compensating for the low/mid-range leanness. I got 40 MPG two up with 3 hard cases and my wife and I are not small. At all.

Is $.40/gal worth a "couple more mpgs"? The op is asking about fuel economy. Sounds as if he wants to save money.

FWIW, my '07 gets 40-41 with 75% hiway driving, slightly higher mpgs if I'm just riding around. My peak was 45mpg during a charity ride, but that was with several hundred harleys, so the strom may have just been taking advantage of all the unburned fuel hanging in the air. :green_lol:
More likely it was because I did 150 miles at 35 mph.

I have an 02 DL1000 without the any mapping changes, and sure, it does not sound or feel perfect under 4k rpms, but I averaged 47 mpg with luggage on my 2000 mile trip to Indy for Moto GP, spending a good bit of time on the highway in 6th gear really helped!!

I am surprised no one has said anything about keeping revs on a Vee below 4000. I thought that was bad ju-ju.

haha.. thats my other bike, wouldnt trade, there a perfect compliment to each other, plus the get along in the garage without supervision

Ok, i'll just deal, I guess going from the dr650 to the dl1000 the gas seems to go faster since I feel more comfortable on the dl and can ride it longer, harder, and faster

The octane rating has also been "done to death".

My personal testing over the last 10-15 years on both cars and bikes has shown 98 gives best economy, best km per $ ratio, and less maintenance on fuel system.

It also gives me better performance.

This has also recently been proven in controlled tests here in Australia and aired about 3 weeks ago on local TV.

I only posted what works for me, I'm no expert.

But I'm not f***ing stupid either.

The experts were the ones who did the tests and the story reported on TV.

This is a great forum, but I'm getting a little tired of the sniping that goes on here, especially from people who no longer own a Strom.

Go buy another one Brian, and lighten up.
If you don't like the thread and the comments posted by people, don't read it.

I can honestly say that I get 200 per tank when my lights start flashing at me. When I fill up it is usually 4.9 gallons which leaves me at almost another gallon to go on.

What are your mods?

Why did you buy a Vee in the first place?

They're a hooligan fun bike, not a gas sipping moped.

Just ride the thing and enjoy it.

If gas is an issue, get rid of the Vee and get yourself a scooter.

:hurray:

My 2003 DL1000 has never been remapped. I run Scorpion cannisters.

It is very easy for me to return a tank at over 50 mpg. Now the engine does run a bit rough in warm weather but I can still get 50 mpg or better when it is running rough. Really, it only runs rough at around 3,600 to 4,000 rpms. But those are the kind of rpms you have to run to get 50+mpg.

When figuring gas mileage are you hooligans using your bike odometer? How reliable is the odometer? I like having a bike that can reliably do 200 miles per tank. Sometimes you buy quality gas and you get 50 miles to the gallon (on my ZX9). Does anybody have the experience of getting a unbelievable mpg occasionally?

Hi test

Is supposed to stop detonation, so if there is a mileage improvement do we have detonation. I am going to throw in some octane booster I have next trip and see.

remapped stock ecu usually right at 40 +/- .5

I am also naive enough to believe that the "super" has more additives too.

On my 750 Kawi ZR7 I could get up to 450km (281 miles) out of a 23L tank. On my Vee I can get a little over 350km (218 miles) out of a 22L tank. So I was getting about 23% better mileage on the old bike. It's alright though, the Vee has about 23% more horsepower.:yesnod:

I totally agree. But I would be able to shed about 30 lbs and that is about it. I am not fat; just built like a brick shit house if you know what I mean. Think world's strongest man contest type build. Yeah, they are 350 lbs of muscle. All those years playing sports and building muscle just made me bulk up without having to hit the gym.

It sucks. I am hard on everything I come in contact with. LOL!

Secret information

Large muscle groups without constant exercise challenge, get fat in them. Like a good steak, fat replaces the muscle tissue and the size of the muscle isn't altered much.

Vees mileage problem is a result of many things just ride and enjoy. If you get like 36 and below then you probably have a problem

Best I've seen was close to 50mpg. I got suckered into going on a group ride with a bunch of cruisers. For the life of me, I can't see anything close to enjoyable running 5 under the limit in a funeral formation on a 4-lane hwy for over 100 miles! I'd rather be in the back seat of a car with my 80 yr old mother behind the wheel...:headbang:
