My local locksmith carries regular steel blanks and I've had a couple of extras made up. Nothing fancy like the oem's but they work just as well for about 1/10 the price.
ebay has blanks for $3 each from China, or you can pay $48 for the same key blank locally.
In case you are wondering, the key blanks are the same for the old/new DL1000's. I bought blanks for my 2004 but never used them, and just tried them in my 2014 and it fits just fine.
Some of our bikes have an immobilizer fitted as standard and the immobilizer code is programmed into the 2 keys that come with the bike. These ones have an red indicator light to the right of the ignition key on the ignition switch. I assume all Australian Vee2s are so equipped, as mine is.
Aussie bikes have the immobiliser and come with 2 keys. My old Bavarian GS also had an i mobilizer but the second key was a dumb little plastic key (with a chip).
I like that Suzuki have provided us 2 x full size keys,.... although they are large enough to use as shovels...
If you don't have the electronic gizmo, an ILCO SUZ16 blank works, also labeled ILCO X276. Locksmiths and key cutting shops can cross to this blank. An older SUZ blank works if the shank of the key is ground down so the key fits all the way into the ignition switch.
Reviving an old thread... Has anyone used the ILCO SUZ16 successfully on the 2014+ DL1000A? I see other threads that said they needed to cut some material off the bottom of the key head to get the full length to press down and turn to the lock position.
I just got off the phone with the local locksmith that both Suzuki Dealerships recommended (since neither of them will cut keys... WHAT?). He said the longer blank for the 14+ was the X241 SUZ18, which they have in stock. I'll try to swing by there in the next couple of days and compare them. But in the meantime, I'm wondering which is correct? I'd rather not have to remove any material from the key head...
ILCOSUZ16 worked for my '13 Wee BUT only when the shoulders of the key were ground down to make the shank LONGER. Stock blank won't go deep enough into the ignition to work properly.
No chip key for the US model Vstroms. Infact, my '14 DL1000A Service manual has 2 wiring diagrams. One for USA, Thailand, Canada, and China. And another wiring diagram that simply says "For Others."
The difference between the 2 is that "For Others" shows an immobilizer system.
Ilco X276 SUZ16 fits my 2018 DL1000XT, no problem. Non-immobilizer US model. Have a legit locksmith cut it.
