Nevada Route 167 - Lake Mead

I'm riding to Black Hat in early Aug. On my way home, I've considered diverting off I-15 and following Route 167 along Lake Mead's western shore, but I'd like to see if any locals have advice in terms of traffic, safety and risk. Up here, pretty much any route that borders a lake is dangerous just due to careless drivers towing boats as well as sheer volume of traffic.

My plans currently have me leaving Vegas sometime between 1 and 4 PM on a Saturday, if day/time make any difference.

Thanks in advance!

It's a pretty drive. But it's HOT that time of year.. really, really HOT. But worth the drive. Early AM is better. It stays hot as the lake temp is in the 90s by that time of year.

Dont forget to bypass more of I15 by using the old US 91 from Mesquite to Saint George... Very nice drive too. Beats the Virgin River Gorge and all the semi's.

I like 91 and up through Gunlock to Enterprise. Comes out in Cedar Shitty in a round about way.

Here is a nice scenic but hot ride for that time of year.

Starts you in Boulder City at the Coffee Cup for some grub.
Don't know time frame you are looking at for how fast you want to get back to Utah, but I can get even more creative if you want.
You ride dirt?

Thanks for the answers--and I've definitely been planning on the Gunlock "side trip" as well. I hadn't seen the old 91--you have to zoom in pretty close to see it, but I'll definitely give that a shot too.

@vegashotwheeler , I appreciate the map. That's pretty much the route I'd planned actually (although I think I pop out a bit further north). I am slowly getting into riding dirt, but I'll be loaded up with a week's worth of clothes and stuff, so I'm not sure dirt's a good option for me this trip (I'm still riding the original battle wings--long, cool story).

Black Hat is an annual cybersecurity conference held in Vegas. Think CES, but the attendees are really geeks, not just salesfolks. The actual conference is a couple days, and rather innocuous. The DefCon conference which follows, however, is an insight into next year's cyber hacks - lots of "Internet of Things" presentations on the current agenda. It amazes me Las Vegas hosts it year after year... Most attendees practice their new-found skills on the Vegas infrastructure - elevators, cars, lights, you name it... Considering that my wife ordered one of those ODB2 insurance discount trackers, I'm quite interested in the hacking ODB2 class (not that I'm going to hack mine, but I'm curious what risks I'm opening myself to).

Your route will then take you through Overton/Logandale area.
Still a nice ride just a faster option compared to through Valley of Fire.
Why I asked about dirt is a maintained dirt road from I-15 to Elgin and into Caliente.
We had a Suzuki Bandit follow us last time I rode it so its doable with stock tires.
Just a much longer route.
Next time
The Old 91 is actually my preferred route to St George instead of the traffic through the Gorge.
Keep a heads up for bicyclists on weekends and cops waiting as you exit the area into Santa Clara.

Me I do anything to avoid 15 especially on the weekend.

I would take 93 just north of Vegas up to 50 to Delta UT then 6.

Won't be as hot as going up 15 either.

Las Vegas in August middle of the afternoon could be 120+ degrees.

Carry lots of water and wear a wet vest. You will still fry, might survive though.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13
