'03 Idle Problem

Hello - I'm having a problem w/ a '03 Strom where occasionally the engine will not return to the idle speed when the throttle is released. This happens completely randomly, & the speed would drop to 3000 rpm & stay there. This has happened since the bike was new. I would have to blip the throttle a couple times & then it would drop to a normal speed. I took it to my local dealer & they replaced a number of engine sensors & also tried it w/ a different ignition module. The problem happens less frequently now & the speed now gets stuck at 2200 rpm & then eventually drops after 15-30 secs. The dealer contacted Suzuki & they claim they have never seen this problem. I believe the dealer did everything they could to resolve the problem. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Thanks................

Hi I have a 03 strom but I have not had that problem. The dealer most likely checked for air leaks but you should make sure. The easyest way to check for a air leak is to spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold and see if the bike dies or increases in engine speed. Wal-mart has carb cleaner for a really good price and I use it alot. The stuff is flamable so I must warn you to be carefull! Using carb cleaner you can pinpoint if and where the leak is and fit it. I hope its something as simple as this! Good luck and let me know what you find.

Idle Problem

Hogdogfxr,

Thanks for the info - I tried the ether suggestion, but no change in speed. Just recently I did notice that if the bike idles at a high speed, I can shift to another gear (either up or down) & the speed will then immediately drop down to the normal idle speed. This took several attempts to fully duplicate because I was usually in traffic when the high idle speed occurred & couldn't just sit around trying different things. It has to be an electronic sensor or switch somewhere on the engine. Calling the dealer today to see if this can help solve the problem.

Thanks,

John

My DL100K5 did this yesterday twice and a blip returned it to normal idle, so I ignored it.

I did 400 miles today and it started doing it for the last 20 miles and did it about 5 times coming to a stop at stoplights. Today, blips did not help and it took about 5-10 secs to drop from 2.5K to 1.2K rpms. I didn't try shifting so can't comment if that affected it.

Oddly, my mileage today was over 50 miles per gallon! I was sure the ODO was wrong, showed 210 miles and I still had 2 bars, WTF! I filled it and sure enough, 3.7 gallons topped it up.

I hope its just a leak somewhere. I haven't had the tank off since I put the vacuum tube extensions on the first week I had it. I've had it for 2.5 months and have put 7300 miles on it.

I'm going to yank the tank and inspect the intakes, exhausts and all hoses thoroughly tomorrow as well as check the TPS and do the TBS before taking it to the dealer .

Update to my idle dillema:

Since I was going get into the intake and exhaust, hoses, etc.. I figured I may as well have some new spark plugs on hand to replace the old ones. Went to the local dealer and asked for the NGK CR8EK's and the parts guy insisted the CR8E's were a good replacement since they had no EK's. I insisted I wanted the EK's (as per the manual and plenty of local knowledge) and he went back to the service area and came back saying they wrenches use the E's when doing maintenance on the big bore bikes. And then he said they were better since they cost only $2.75 vs $15. Gotta love that  . Chock it up to another reason to do my own maintenance I guess. Quality means nothing to some.

Gonna go searching the other dealers tomorrow to find me some EK's or Iridiums if I can find them.

Did the full maintenance deal, new plugs, cleaned air filter, tps checked ok, tbs adjusted, stps checked ok then took her out for a 20 mile ride and she runs smoother than ever. No hicups, idle probs, or anything. Darn I love this bike. Also found the center stand bolts loose and one small bolt missing. I like doing my own maintenance, its a pain in the butt however I always feel better knowing the work was done, and helps to get to know the bike better IMHO.

Not sure but I think the new NGK plugs are helping to smooth out the motor. Along with a good TBS as well. She hasn't run this smooth from idle all the way up to redline since I had her. I kept squeezing the motor with my feet to try and 'feel' the vibes that were almost non-existent. If this is what the 650 is like all the time....darn that must be nice.
