brake pad types

Im on the hunt for new brake pads for the rear of my new to me Wee.

Sintered
Semi metallic
ceramic
organic

reading the marketing/sales info doesn't help me in the least on deciding on which to get for front/rear. the fronts will need them soon, the rears need them now...

can anyone give me a 30 second description of each, and maybe a recommendation?

As a 100% pavement rider, I use sintered and organic. I use sintered on the front to provide more braking power for equal lever effort and organic on the back to keep from locking (or actuating the ABS in my case) too easily. Semi metallic will fall between the two extremes. I'm unfamiliar with ceramic.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Organic (One of the EBC options) and Organic/Ceramic (Gold Fren) work better if you ride on dirt, or on sandy sealed roads. (My ride to work takes me along the coast).

Not as much initial bite as the semi-metallic or sintered pads but a lot more linear and they tolerate/shed grit stuck in the pads a lot better. They also seem to work "better" in rain - though if you have ABS that may be a don't care.

The sintered pads bite better and generally require less lever force, but can be a bit much on slippery surfaces - they also squeal horribly when they get grit in them. They can suck when very wet as well - nothing nothing WHAM!.

That's a generalization though - pads from different manufacturers behave differently - and rider "feel" means that pads that suck for one rider may work well for another.

Most options seem to be better than the stock Suzuki pads . Note that the stock pads have a stainless steel and ceramic liner that you probably want to peel off and keep. That won't be obvious under the dirt, but give the pads a scrub and they'll peel off.

For the front, get EBC HH pads or Galfer HH pads. For the rear, Suzuki stock or EBC organic.

So-called ceramic pads are all over the chart. Some ceramic material might be in the best high performance pads, and some ceramic material might be in mediocre performance pads designed for no dust and no squeal. Ignore the "ceramic" label.

For increased braking performance with less lever effort on the fronts, get Blair's SVracingparts.com adapters for 4-piston calipers. These use different model HH pads than stock calipers. Find the calipers first on eBay, then get the adapters to fit the calipers.
