Drained battery?

I had something really unusual for me happen this weekend on my usually reliable '06-650 vstrom. I went for about an hour ride (started right up in the garage) and after I stopped for a break the battery was dead. It had enough power to act like it was going to start but then as soon as the starter button was hit it would just click and everything would shut off. I was able to jump start it and it started right up, but here's the part I wasn't expecting.. The first probably 5 miles the gauges were freaking out, going from 0 to max and back, along with the gas and temp gauges flickering on and off and so was the FI light. It died about 4 times and restarted by just rolling along. After about 5 miles everything was back to normal with the way it was running.. When I got home I immediately tried start it and the battery was dead. (at least I think it was) so I hooked it up to the battery tender and it charged up fine over the next few hours. My question is, where would be the most likely place to start figuring out what's wrong with it? Regulator/Rectifier maybe?

Drained battery?

The first thing I would do is to make sure the main battery connections are clean by removing them and inspecting. How old is the battery?

It's the battery. Have it load-tested.

You have a 5 year old battery that is designed to have a life span of 5 years.
Buy a new one.

Thanks for the responses, I'll buy a new battery and try that.. I am the 2nd owner of the bike, so it may very well be the original battery, but I am not 100% sure. It was just weird that it started right up turned over like usual and only after I rode it it was dead. Hopefully it's just the battery, that's easy to fix!!

Be careful of immediately believing the worst case.

Battery is probably due to be replaced.

Same happened to me. After I drained the second battery...the very next day...turned out to a dead Stator.

I often lose control. I really I hate my life.

Got a new battery and charged it and put it in last night. Today I started it up and meter shows 13. something at idle and about 14.7 when revved up. so it looks like the battery was the problem.. fingers crossed!!

Garage
The flickering gauges makes me think there is a bad connection somewhere. Start looking through every connector you can see. The voltage looks fine but you may end up needing and service manual and DMM to start combing through the charging system if no other problems are found.
