Fuel Issues, Where to Start????

Please pardon me if this topic has been beat to death but my search results were not enough. With that said, here's my problem:

04 Wee with 16k on the clock. Noticed on my way to work Friday my gas light started to flash. First time I've ever ran it that low since I'm on my second tank of gas since buying it 3 months ago. On my way home that afternoon I noticed a surge in response so I pulled into a station to fill up. After the fill up I figured all would be well but the more I ran the bike the worse it got. It seemed to idle well and even mild acceleration was ok but harder acceleration would result in a feeling that it was running out of gas. It got worse and would hardly run by the time I got home. It would start and idle but wouldn't pull at all. I though I'd try some fuel injection cleaner. Upon opening the tank I noticed some light rust just around the filler neck. I'm thinking it's a fuel filter issue. Next day with a cold engine it seem to run and rev fine but I didn't have the courage to venture out on it. Any one experience a similar issue that might keep me from tossing parts at this thing? Thanks, Al

First thing I'd do is take the tank off, dump the gas, flush it out real good and go from there.

I agree with Ozart. You probably have a bad tank of fuel and may have plugged the fuel filter. You might also try putting in some water remover or gas line antifreeze although I suspect that isn't the problem.

In the future try and stick to "Top Tier" gas.

Well I drained the gas out and there was more rust in it than I thought would be. Guess the next step is to find the filter and see if the rest of the rust is there. Seems like I read once about a filter mod that allowed the use of an additional filter or something. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks, Al
