How to manually turn the engine?

Sadly, the cold weather is approaching. As part of the maintenance in putting the bike down for a long winter's nap, I was planning on spraying some "fogging oil" into the cylinders thru the spark plug holes.

But I've read several articles that recommend that, after spraying in the fogging oil, you should crank the engine a couple of revolutions to ensure that the oil is distributed throughout the cylinders.

How does one do that on a V-Strom 650A? I assume that you do NOT want the spark plugs to fire; you just want to turn the engine somehow to move the pistons back and forth in the cylinders. Would I need to disconnect all the spark plug wires? I was hoping to avoid that, as the "inside" plugs are a pain to get to. I was hoping to spray the fogging oil in thru the "outside" plug holes.

Can the engine be cranked manually somehow without the starter? Can I push it in gear? Or turn the rear wheel while the bike is on the center stand? Or can I turn the engine using the hex socket on the left side of the engine? In gear? In neutral?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

That's probably the best way. Turn counterclockwise in neutral.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Hit the starter button before putting the plugs back in.

Thank you Greywolf! I was hoping it was simple.

And thanks for your tip, davenjai, but I should've been clearer: I'm not planning on taking out all four of the spark plugs - just the "outside" ones that can be easily reached. I'm guessing that I don't want to hit the starter with only half the plugs out.

Thanks again folks!

I was wondering how you could miss that:mrgreen: Can you pull both front cyl wires? It may turn over without firing.

That's how the service manual says to turn it while doing a valve inspection, so seems reasonable to me.

Firing an ignition coil without a spark plug attached is very hard on it. Short the coils to ground if you have to fire the coils without the spark plugs attached.

As I've told you many times before, the journey is the destination. So to answer your question: Yes, we are there.
