How much did you have to adjust things?
Is it possible that you confused inch measurements with millimeters and used feelers marked in thousands of an inch instead of mm? (This is common with vintage bikes...) You'll end up with valve clearances about 2.5-3 times too large if this happens.
The other explanation is that perhaps you're a tooth off on the timing.
