akrapovic stuck baffle question

I just purchased an 05 DL1000. It has a set of akrapovic cans on it. According to the previous owner, they have been on it for about 4 years. I would like to remove the baffles/dampers, to see if it helps power/throttle response w/o being ridiculously loud. However, since the damper has not been removed in 4 years, it seems to be "carboned" in. Akrapovic warns, on their website, to be very careful what you use to clean the pipes as they stain/discolor easily, so I don't want to just spray in a bunch of penetrating oil w/o knowing if that is advisable. I have tried clamping a couple of needle nose vise grips 180 degrees apart and tapping on them gently, with no luck. Any move force and it seems they will bend and get ugly quick.

I would like to remove them w/o damaging them, in case I would like to put them back in.

Any ideas, advice? Maybe leave it alone as the performance is no better, or because it will be way too loud??? Or maybe, Rip them puppies out! You won't believe the difference and you would never want to put them back in once you experience them out.

The bike will be ridiculously loud and you won't feel any real difference. Go have a beer and forget about it... Your neighbors will thank you.

If you're not running with any fuel modifiers (ie PCIII) you may run into lean conditions by taking the baffles out. I'll bet it would be sweet sounding though.

answer to baffling question

Okay. So here's how I got them out and the results:

I sprayed WD40 around the edges where the baffle meets the pipe. (WD40 is what Akrapovic recommends for cleaning the pipe) I let it sit/soak all day. That evening I grabbed the edge of the baffle with a set of channel locks, and gently tapped on the flat surface of the channel locks where they are at 90 degrees to the jaw, Gripping the baffle in a different place every few taps. The baffles slowly came out, undamaged.


The bike has a tad more throttle response and just enough more power to make 2nd to 3rd gear wheelies stay in the air easier. Some of that may be because the bike is still new to me and I am refining technique, but I'd swear shifting through the gears with the wheel in the air is noticeably easier now. I just gotta get used to wheelieing a bike with a windshield. It really changes reference points.

As for the noise, it is a tad louder, but mostly it just has a higher tone that sounds better. I do not like a noisy motorcycle, and I still would not consider these pipes loud. It is quieter than your average Harley. Am I allowed to say that word on this site?

Anyway, the Dyno chart on the Akrapovic website charts a stock Vstrom with the baffles removed. That tells me that is the best way (power wise) to run it. Someday, I will buy a PCIII, but my next project is to adjust the valves and sync the TBs, since this has never been done and the bike has 18K on the clock. Sometimes, it has a little hiccup just off idle in traffic. I think that is probably a TBS problem.
