2003 DL1000 axel spacers/gearbox clunk

When I first got the new bike (two weeks ago), I was a little worried about the clunky shifting, especially from 1st to 2nd. I googled "VStrom gearbox" and came up with several threads with "clunky" in the title so I figured they're all like that. Yesterday, I read that if you don't have replacement, different sized axel spacers in the rear, you'll have clunky shifting and wear the cush drive rubber down faster. Seems easy enough to replace the spacers so I'd like to give that a try but I have one question: If the different sized spacers move the axel to the left or right, wouldn't that cause the disc rotor to not line up with the caliper properly? Same with the chain alignment.

It's only the sprocket carrier that gets moved 2mm inwardly. That is said to improve sprocket alignment and set the carrier deeper into the cush rubbers. Wheel alignment is unchanged.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

I read the thread but the two people mentioned who make or made the spacers did not answer my e-mails. Can anyone point me to someone who is currently making them?

my o3V has 78k on it w/ the original spacers/cush rubbers.Not all Vs need th is mod, as not everythig written on the web is necessarily true.

Richland Rick is the only source I know of right now and he is on vacation. Try again in a couple of weeks.

Rick is one of the folks I e-mailed. Thanks, I'll try again in a couple of weeks if I don't hear back.
Tremendous clunk from neutral to one and pretty hard from 1 to 2 so I'm pretty sure the new spacers won't hurt.

I used to have a nasty clunk when the bike was new going from 1st to 2nd. It would hurt the top of my left foot. I did the spacer mod and switched to Mobile 1 10w40 bike oil at the same time and it went completely away. I don't know if it was more miles on the bike or the oil or the spacers but I'm a happy camper now.

My bike has 17,500 miles on it, 500 by me. The chain and sprockets were just changed by the provious owner so no way for me to tell if they were wearing funny. I just changed the oil Sunday using Castrol semi-synthetic. With my last bike, an SV650, switching to this oil did make the shifting a lot smoother. No noticeable difference with this bike so I figure the spacer switch can't hurt.
