need help with suspension

ok, I'm a complete newb when it comes to bike suspensions, so I would like some imput on this:
I have a 07 DL650 with only 7K miles that rides like a forklift. you feel even the slightest bump or ridge in the road. I have added a fork brace and that seemed to help a little, but other than that the bike is totally stock. What I am looking for is a plush ride, if thats even possible with these bikes. The majority of my riding is done on rough country back roads, some gravel and dirt access roads. I have read about putting heavier sonic springs and ricor intiminators, but I don't know enough about them to really know if they would help in my situation. I'm thinking adding heavier springs would make it even harsher.
how about the preload adjusters on the forks? right now they are about halfway from the bottom, but thats as far as they can go as they are hitting the bars. would screwing them all the way in help?
I am also clueless as what to do with the preload on the rear shock.
I weigh 210 @ 5'11" anybody got any ideas?

position 3 on the rear shock and what the owners manual says for the front at position three works good for me at 225lbs . i think you have yours cranked too stiff . i do crank the rear up to almost four with full luggage for camping

It's too much compression damping that gives a harsh ride. No amount of playing with spring preload will change that. The 650 has a damper rod type fork that does not allow the proper range between compression and rebound damping. Fork kits that call for drilling out the damper rod holes to ease compression damping and add a cartridge emulator to handle rebound damping can help but a properly tuned cartridge is best. You are new to motorcycling though so may just be unfamiliar with the fact that a bike's wheels are a much larger percentage of the total vehicle weight than is the case with a car or truck. That ratio of sprung to unsprung weight will always result in a more active ride with a motorcycle. A bike's suspension is there mostly to keep the wheels on the ground, not to provide a cushy platform for the rider.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

I have no affiliation other than knowing the owner and he lives not too far from my house. I'd call Rick at Cogent Dynamics He's been building suspensions for DL650's but hasn't got it up on the website yet. Great guy, he tests all his stuff on the bikes in WNC so it's set up well. As soon as I get the KLR sold I'll be in line to get his setup on my 1000. Even if you don't want a full treatmentgive them a call for suggestions.
