Did dealer screw up my bike? Does your bike backfire? (Fixed)

I took my bike in to the dealer for the 14,500 mile service a month ago. I was getting ready to go on a long ride for vacation. When I picked up the bike, the engine seemed louder. Not just the exhaust, but the entire engine just seemed like it was making more noise.

I called the dealer and mentioned it was louder, they said they put thinner oil in it and that is probably why it sounds louder. They said the valve clearance was fine and they didn't change anything there.
I was willing to go along with it. I have not changed the oil or anything, but have put 2k miles on it since the dealer had it in for service.

Along with the engine just being louder, it backfires. It only backfires when letting off the throttle, and doesn't do it every time, but it does do it. It is not major loud, but it bothers me. I think the engine isn't running right. The engine is louder, and therefore sounds more ferocious, but I don't like the idea of my engine being screwed up.

It is a 08 DL650A with 16,500 miles. The only thing I have changed mechanically is the air filter to a k&n.

What do you think I should do? Should I take it back to the dealer and have them check it out? Should I change the engine oil and see if that does it? Does your bike backfire? Should I check to see if they left something disconnected?

Backfiring is a malfunction. Any bike that does it needs to be fixed. It usually comes from a bad connection between the throttle body and the engine allowing air into the intake without added fuel. Find out what oil they used. It's a separate issue but thinner is ridiculous.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Noise,Backfire

Sounds like inlet air ducting loose/disconnected or air filter housing not properly assembled.Don't go too far from home until you get someone competent to look at it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I just called the service and he didn't have much of an idea on why it would backfire. I said what you guys said, and he said there isn't much room for it to not be connected correctly. He said maybe a vacuum line or something. Anyway, I am going to take it in tuesday and have them look at it.

I hope I didn't shorten the engine life by driving it 2000 miles before getting them to look at it.

My DL650A came with no screw on the rear air box to throttle body clamp. Lots of things can happen. If they did a TBS, they could have left off the vacuum port plugs but that wouldn't cause a noticeable noise increase. Here's a picture of a rear throttle body boot off on a DL1000. The no room comment is just as inane as the thin oil one.

I think you need to find a better dealer.

They fixed my bike. I took it in tuesday at 4:30 expecting someone to be there to work on it, no one was. I had to drop it off. I called wednesday about 3 and they hadn't worked on it yet. I wasn't happy. They called me about 4 saying they found the problem, there was an air hose disconnected. I told the tech how poorly the situation was handled and he gave me 15% off a new tire.

Both the tech and I agreed that when I called a couple days after having the bike, the person on the phone shouldn't have said it is probably because they changed the oil, they should have just told me to take the bike back in.

I never had a problem with this dealer before. Now they are on probation with me. If something like this happens again, I won't be going back.

Thanks for your help.

FYI: He pointed the air hose out to me that wasn't on correctly. It is on the left side of the bike, under the front of the tank. He said it had to do with epa stuff and lets extra air in the engine under certain circumstances (he told me what circumstance, but I have a horrible memory, I want to say under heavy load, but don't quote me.) The symptoms were some popping when the rpm's were dropping down from over 5k, like when you rev it up and let off the throttle, and the engine seemed twice as loud as before. I think it seemed louder because it was taking in air into this port constantly.
