Overheating

Okay, this is my first bike in 30 years, so since I was 10. I bought my K5 DL650 used over the winter. Today I took my first long ride with it in the mid 80's. Mainly interstate and the bike performed flawlessly as it has since I have had it. I just changed the oil about a week ago. The bike normally run 3 bars. Well on the way back I decided to take some back roads on my way back home. I ended up in Sevierville, TN at about 4:30pm. Evedently there had been an accident cause traffic was backed up even further than normal, plus the normal construction. While I am sitting in traffic I notice that the indicator had climed to 4 bars. No biggy it was rather warm. Well then it got the the 5th bar and then the little red "OH CRAP" light came on. So I decided I better get moving to cool her off. Once I got moving again I had no problems.

So here is the question. Is that normal for stop and go on the wee? Any help is greatly appreciated.

After 15,000 miles in FLA, I'd say that's maybe a problem. Normal for me is 4 bars all the time.

Check to make sure your radiator is clean and your fan comes on okay. Most Vee riders report 2 bars in most circumstances and 3 in more heated conditions. Most Wee riders report 3 bars all the time once warmed up.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

My 06 650 runs three bars consistently. I've been in traffic some and it stayed at three, although Seattle weather hasn't offered up any temp challenges.

Even in hot weather and bad traffic, I don't think it should light up the overtemp indicator - instead is should just stabilize with the fan cycling on/off. I'd let it idle in your driveway and see if the fan comes on. If it doesn't, that's your problem. If it does, then I'd check coolant and the thermostat.

Last summer I rode through rush hour construction, and my DL650 never over heated. We, in Minneapolis, had more days over 90 degrees that Atlanta, GA (That's just not right!).

Some Stoms had a coolant hose leak. Check the coolant level (easy stuff first).

My Wee will run at 3 bars all the time, and the fan will come on to maintain that temp. Never been to 4 bars. Owners manual says the fan has it's own 15 amp fuse so you might check it out. Also, I read a thread somewhere about a small plastic protrusion that prevents the fan from turning and is easily snipped off. Check to see if the fan will turn freely. I wonder if maybe a connector came loose ? Good luck and keep us informed.

Well the fuse is good and I checked the fan and found that it does not turn freely. Though it will turn. I compared it to my coworkers wee strom and his turns freely. I let the bike idle for a while here at work and it would never get about 3 bars in the bay. So the fan never kicked on. I will be taking it by my freinds shop tomorrow and he is going to have a look at it. Will keep you all updated. Thanks for all the input.

Well my friend decided to come by after he got off work and we found the "Problem". Evedently the Prior owner had dropped the bike on its right side, or bumped the radiator and it got pushed over to the left. Therefore the fan was hitting the front of the engine. The radiator mounts were bent over about a 1/4". With a little pushing we got the fan off the front of the engine and the radiator back on its pin on the left side. It still needs to go over about an 1/8" but it has freed up the fan. Again thanks for all the great input. And Bob in south Charlette if you read this thanks for telling me the bike was in showroom condition :x (sarcasm).

Glad you found the problem. At least it wasn't a high dollar fix. Ride On and keep it cool.
