If your going to be on the road for awhile. get some extra fuses (mini 10/15amp) and a 30 amp main fuse. yes there are spares but you never know. i popped a 30 amper and the bike WONT start. use your spare and your in a remote area and it happens again, your stuck.
Also get a spare ring clip that holds your shifter arm/peg on. mine popped off on the way home one nite. i had a spare. dont forget the tool to put it on. you can get it in a kit of 3 or more at a cheap tool store. or just push it in with a screw driver i guess.
Also pack a first aid kit. i've read storys here where guys have gone down on gravel roads in alaska.
I have put 22,000 on my 05 1000 in the last 2 years. i havent had major problems. but reg preventive maintenance takes care of this. i hope you find someone out there to help you get rolling.
