DL1000 L2 Cam Chain Noise
2012 Vee. ~32,000 miles.
I had a pretty noisy tick that was driving me crazy, so I finally went looking for it. The stethoscope was loudest near the crankcase and between the first cylinder & starter. My ear isn't trained to the specifics of cam chain noise in this engine, and I've read several descriptions of it being a sloppy growl. So as an experiment, I decided to improvise a variable cam chain tensioner and test for myself.
To do this, I removed the front tensioner, which allowed it to ratchet all the way out. I removed the center plug to give access to the plunger. I then installed it loosely with the two Allen-head bolts. If you do this, have something ready for the small amount of oil that may leak out.
I then started the engine, revved to ~2000 and locked my throttle lock. Everything sounded normal, including the annoyingly loud tick. As you can see in the video below, I then applied pressure to the tensioner and observed the sound. With more tension the tick essentially goes away. I reinstalled the tensioner correctly, started the motor, and then pushed for one more click on the ratchet. This is a good compromise between being too tight and listening to it tick. I'm assuming I'll need to replace the cam chain sooner or later, but 32,000 miles seems low for that.
Post count too low to post a link. Maybe someone else can post it below.
