Dl1000 bogs down and stall after warming up

Hello fellow vstrom riders. So I have a troubleshooting issue that I want to run by you.

First my ride.
2002 DL1000 60 k miles on it.
stock exhaust (I think)
Power Commander 3 with Steve Davis map
Standard air filter
New plugs near the end of last season.

About a month ago I brought the bike out of winter hibernation and did spring maintenance.
I put the battery in, changed the oil and filter, checked the fluids, cleaned and lubed the chain, etc. I put it away for the winter with a full tank of new stabilized fuel.
I fired it up, let it warm up, checked it for leaks and took it for a test ride. I got about 4 blocks down the hill without out issue. When trying to come back up the hill the bike would not hold power and eventually died.
The bike would not start after that I got the bike home and was not able to work on it till this weekend.

I checked the Fuel map and it appeared to be fine. After sitting for a month on the charger the bike will start and idle /rev fine. The power commander shows @ 4300 rpm ( about what my tach show too) but only 5% throttle change. With the bike turned off Power Commander shows throws from %2 to %100 percent change. I took it out again and it did the exact same thing.

So I am thinking this might be the throttle position sensor. My question is would the throttle position sensor keep my bike from starting back up? What else do I need to look at? I am going to go check the filter and the boots for air leaks. But kind of at a loss here.

I'll be the first to tell you I don't know everything but can share my experience with you. Disconnect the Power Commander and see what happens.

I had similar issues but was on my way out of state at the time and a mechanic unplugged mine and I had no issues for the duration of the trip. Got rid of it immediately after I got home. I know there will be backlash to this opinion but give it a try and see if it helps.

It didn't do this prior to going into hibernation?

If so, it is most likely hibernation-related. I doubt it's the TPS.

Either something is gummed up or an electrical connection is compromised. My first guess would not be the PC but I have no experience with those things.

Did you keep the battery charged over the winter? Did you run stabilized fuel through the throttle bodies or just dump it in the tank after it was parked?

It did not do this before the winter. The battery stayed on a charger all winter ( but out of the bike). I did run the bike on the stable fuel for a while and topped off the tank.

Further trouble shooting.

In dealer mode I get c00 and the dash in the middle idleing @ 1200

I will try and pull the plugs and look at them. The bike does not smell rich but I will look any way.

I will try unplugging the PC.

Sometimes it is best to first recheck in the area that you previously worked, for a possible connector or vacuum pipe not replaced properly. You didn't by any chance open up the air box, to check your air filter? If so, it could be that a throttle boot could be disturbed and is now leaking air or that a vacuum lead may have come adrift somewhere. Another suggestion, have you done a fuel flow test?

Gert I took your advice and I did a quick fuel test the pump only put out 210 cc of fuel on 3 key cycles. I have pulled the fuel pump and the filter is not bad at all there was a small amount of crud in the sump. I am going to do the external fuel filter mod since I have it apart. I will see if that increases my fuel flow. I will keep you posted.

Did you check the air filter. If it was stored where mice could get to it they are known to nest in the filter box.

One simple thing you might try is putting some gas line antifreeze/water remover in the gas in case that top up of gas had some water in it.

Thanks for the Input all. @nvr2old I did check the air filter since I took the tank off now, other that some sponge material from the crank case vent filter All looked good.

@V-Tom I dumped all the fuel from the tank and checked the insides. The tank looks surprisingly gunk free.


@ Gert - After by passing the high pressure fuel filter I am getting a little more than 350 cc of fuel for every 3 cycles of the pump. There is a strong possibility that my engine was just fuel starved do to a clogged filter cartridge.

Sadly no test ride yet as I broke the fuel line quick disconnect. oh well. Will update after the new parts arrive.

All signs point to a clogged filter. I think you'll be good now.
When I did mine, it was because it would bog at 3/4 throttle. Been good since.
