front wheel removal

Anyone have the tool for removing your front wheel, 19mm hex or special tool? Is it necessary?

The DL1000 is 19mm and the 650 needs a 12mm. Some folks use a bolt of the proper head size and a couple of jam nuts.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

The crap steel in the toolkit will not deal with it. I too recommend the bolt and jamnut methods.

A 5/8" spark plug socket just happens to have a hex on the top side close to 19mm. On some of them you can insert an extension backwards through the socket and use it as an axel key. This tip saved my butt in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks guys, I checked my tool kit it doesn't seem to have anything to remove the front wheel, whats up with that, I guess my tire is supposed to last forever. I made one out of a bolt with a 19 mm head.

You can order a 19mm hex socket from mcmaster.com for about $12, IIRC.

A friend of mine bought one of these and it broke when changing the wheel on his 1000. I don't recommend it since it is made of aluminum. The one from McMaster-Carr is a good tool - probably better in the long run.
