Reinstalling rubber mat on rear rack?

'09 DL650A, just got home with it. PO removed the rubber mat from the stock aluminum rack in back. I would like to put it back on, but I cannot get the rubber nipples back through the holes.

I tried:
- just pulling with pliers, then added a little oil as lubricant and tried again
- tucking it through bit by bit with a small flat blade screwdriver
- pushed and pounded from the top with the handle end of the screwdriver

I think increasing brute force will just tear the rubber.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Um, that's strange. I pulled the rubber mat off my '07 ABS Wee and had little trouble putting it back on. Try again using dish detergent as a lube, pushing from the top and pulling from the bottom at the same time.

Good luck.

The rubber is remarkably resilient. Putting long nose pliers through the hole. grabbing the projection lubricated with silicone grease/spray and pulling with lots of force will usually do the trick. I'd avoid petroleum products on anything that may be real rubber.

Thanks guys, I got it! I used soapy water for lube, as George suggested. I tried greywolf's suggestion of putting the needlenose through the hole, but you actually get less grip that way. I then swapped to regular pliers, which give grip across the entire protrusion. Pull with vigor, regrip. Pull with vigor, regrip. Repeat until "pop"! Do in 4 more places, rinse remaining soapy water off rack, and done.

Thanks again.

Now I remember what I did. I tied a string around the rubber and pulled it through with the string wrapped around the nose of the pliers after grabbing it.

I actually cut off a small bit of the "corner" (does a round thing have corners?) of each nipple.

Cheers
