V-Strom Won't Turn

Good Afternoon,

Just a quick background, I was re stationed to another country. I brought my V-Strom with me, in which I had to completely de fuel and remove the battery. When she arrived (about 2 months to get here), I reconnected the battery, put some gas in and she started up just fine. She sat for another week, until I could provide a shelter (new home doesn't have a garage), but now she won't start. She doesn't even turn over. I recharged the battery, drained & refueled, and still nothing.

I took off the tank and inspected the fuel pump and filter to see if it was clogged, and it's not. I thought this might have been the issue since the draining, some residual gas might have gotten all sticky. Nope gas, flows through and is seen in the combustion chambers. She tries, but just doesn't seem to get to turn over.

Any thoughts? I don't know of any motorcycle shops out here yet also, and riding season is next week.

Fuel or the lack there of wouldn’t prevent it from turning over. Possibly one of the safety switches, clutch or side stand switches. Did you make sure the kill switch is in the run position?

1. Does the fuel pump run when you turn the key?

2. Is there a check message on the display?

3. Did you try to fiddle with the kill switch?

4. Have you tried cleaning the starter button switch?

5. Have you checked the fuses?

My guess is that the battery has failed to hold a charge, or that a switch of some sort is preventing it from turning over. Do you get the dash display when you power on? Does the dash go dim when you push the starter? Do you hear the starter solenoid click?
First check that the battery is holding a charge, the connections are clean, and then look at switches.

Ditto - fuel doesn't have anything to do with it not turning over. Do the lights come on?

V-Strom Won't Turn

Without trying to be a smart a$$, are you pulling the clutch lever in prior to trying to start? Dumb idea (I think) on Suzuki's part. If not that, then likely the battery has taken a dump as mentioned or one of the mentioned safety switches.

I think you need to elaborate on what you mean by "she won't turn" and "she tries but just doesn't seem to get to turn over..."

No message on the display, does light up. Didn't touch the kill switch and I checked fuses. Turns out it was a bad battery.

So as it turns out, it was a bad battery. While it did "charge", didn't seem to be doing it. I swapped with my other bikes battery and it turns with some throttle. Hasn't ran in a while due to transport and the end of the riding season (live in the top three snowiest DoD installations), she kind of sat and chilled. Thanks for the assist! Glad she is up and running again.
