Oil Foaming - lots of tiny bubbles...

Returned from a ride and noticed the idle hammer (?), clatter (?) was a bit louder than usual. I have near 18,000 mi on the wee now and the idle hammer has never been an issue. I shut the bike down, and in looking the wee over I noticed in the oil inspection window the oil frothing with a slew (meaning many, many, many) tiny bubbles.

I'm not an aggressive rider and the oil light didn't come on. Put it up on the center stand and waited for a while and checked the level. Oil level is right at the full mark.

I've been running Shell Rotella T Syn 5-40 without problems until now.

Possible causes???? Contamination?? Is there an oil check valve that may be sticking (could this be causing the louder clatter - Cam Chain??) Other??

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks!

How many miles on the oil itself? Oil has anti-foam agents that wear out.

You've covered the basics,
... oil level, contamination.

Did you just get done doing slalom turns before looking at the oil? That's the only time I can remember seeing a head of bubbles in the oil window.

The oil has close to 2,000 mi on it - so not a concern. I didn't ride aggressively either - just out for a nice cruise.

I'm going to change the oil/filter tomorrow and test it out again.

I found this depends on the brand of oil. The one oil I used to use did a lot of foaming, I switched oils and now no more foam.

Totaled on June 9 2012 08 Victory Vision Tour Premium.
No longer riding due to injuries on June 9 2012.

problem solved...

Well, I changed the oil and filter and the foaming problem went away. I also changed from Shell Rotella T Syn to the Suzuki MC dino. I don't believe however that the kind of oil was the issue as I had used Rotella since about the 4000 mi mark without a problem.

My only conclusion would be water or other (?) type of contamination. One possibility is I changed the oil/filter prior to storing for the winter. I then changed the oil when I took the strom out of storage. Condensation may have been the issue.

Whatever it may have been, it has gone away now and all is good. Thanks for your responses - I appreciate it.

Garage
Definitely sounds like you got some water in there somehow. It doesn't take much to make the oil foam up.

Did this quiet the clatter as well as take care of the bubbles?
