Hotcams shim kit not so hot

Just a post to bitch really. 05 Wee with 14,000 miles, big trip planned = valve adjustment time.

I bought the Hotcams kit after reading about it here so I can have everything I need. I measure valve clearance and all 8 valves are on the tight side of spec. I want to loosen all by .05mm to put in the middle of spec range.

Take the front buckets off and find 170 intake and 172 (I thought Suzi shims were in .05mm steps?) exhaust shims so I need four 165's. Damn, the kit only has 3. I use two 160's on the intakes to put them at the loose end of spec. Two 165's on the exhaust. Button up the front, measure clearance...perfect.

Rear buckets off and yep, 170's and 172's, :bom_furious3nly one 160 and one 165 remaining. So the bike is all over the garage until I get more 165's from Ron Ayers because I'll be damned if I'm going to buy another kit for 2 or 3 shims.

You should have bought the refill kit instead. It can be got in just the sizes you need for the strom. Also has 5 of each size. Only about $30.

I was trying to get it all done in 1 day. I didn't know what sizes I needed until I got the buckets out to see what she had started with. I didn't want to tear it down and then wait a week for shims, but it looks like I have to anyway so i feel the kit was a waste of $ for me.

Damn Shep ain't it so, its always something:smilielol5::smilielol5: Yes Tanker you got a whole box of shims you will never use however they do tell you there are three shims per size. You pay your money and take your chances go price the shims at the dealer and hope they have every size you need. Something you could have done is ask the other wee owners what size shims they were seeing in their bikes to get a size range then buy 8 shims in 3 sizes down. Then you would probably still be here complaining about shims bought that you did not need. As for big trip planning why wait until the last minute to perform the valve adjustment had you taken the bike apart with sufficent time you could have bought the shims you actually needed. I know you Wee owners are frugal but if you go cheap and it bites you in the butt why do you have to complain??? after all it was your decision.

Where did you get last minute? Trip's over a month away.

The reason for post is to help the next guy when he does a search of the site for shims, hotcams, etc. I did several searches of valve shims site:stromtrooper.com, read every post, never saw hotcams kit might not be enough to get the job done.

Frugality has nothing on me. You assume too much.

Most can read and if you did you would know you get three shims per size and if you knew what you were doing you would know that might not be enough. As for the last minute that is what most people do.:smilielol5::smilielol5: then bitch. Yes Shep you are correct semi-gloss. Naw assume only means a ass out of U and me this time its you but I have been there too.
