Question octane question

I noticed in a prior thread from someone else that they were putting in fuel with a octane of 89 or lower. In all of my past experience with bikes i have been told and found out for myself, that the higher the octane fuel you put in the better. I have had harleys, BMWs and buells.

Is this true with the strom?

Does the bike actually require the normal 85 octane fuel?

Will it hurt the bike if you run higher octane fuel?

thanks for the help guys

Higher octane numbers than necessary are not beneficial. Use the lowest octane that doesn't cause pinging. In Minnesota, that should be the recommended 87. You'd have to be over about 5000ft to use 85. Whatever is regular in your area is best. http://www.cartalk.com/content/featu...questions.html also applies to motorcycles. Higher octane than necessary could retard the timing a little but shouldn't cause harm. In some brands, higher octane fuels have better detergent packages. Top tier fuels have proper detergent additives in the lowest grades. http://www.toptiergas.com/

In my town they have added 10% ETHONAL to all gas. Lost of friends have to travel out of the area to get gas for their boats, mowers and other toys...

How to you think the Ethonal will change performance??
Due to that, I fill with the highest rated fuel

My vee likes regular. My tengai with slightly higher than stock compression uses premium and my dirt/race bike with 13.5:1 compression likes a 50:50 mix of premium and 111 octane race gas.

But that is just me and my bikes, run whatever you feel works the best.

So what is it, am I a smart*** or a dumb***? Maybe I'm just an ***hole.

Is all regular the same?

Don't mean to hijack the thread (the question seemed to be answered) but is all regular the same? I was told that gas is generic (per grade) and different brands just amend it with different additives.

I also heard that it takes a lot more oil to make premium over regular so if there is an mpg boost, it's probably not worth the impact on the environment.

The the base stocks are the same but additive packages between brands are different. See the top tier gas link.
