Ghostly temperature problem

Has anyone experienced a ny strange temp gauge issues on a WEE? I have an 07 that I changed the thermostat on 'cause it gave symptons of being stuck. I burped the system extensively. problem is after riding it to warm up it suddenly goes to high temp and Check indication flashed in display. Turn bile off, back on, bike reads 3 bars until to start down the road. Checked fluid, all is ok. Checked temp with Infrared thermomeer, everything in spec. Fans come on/off at correct temp. Dealer checked it out, found same sympton. OBD confirmed no error codes. ETC unit checked good for voltage to it. They called Suzuki, and were told nothing was wrong, that the bile, according to all the veriifed checks was not running hot, but the dang guage says ii is intermittently. I'm ordering an ETC just ot get rid of the potential for an intermittent problem withit, but dealer/Suzuki says that is isn't necssary.
Can anyone shed some light on this if they have had a similiar issue. By the way the bike only has 4400 miles on it.

The CHEC indication indicates a fault. In that condition the entire LCD lights up. Turn on the bike and turn off the kill switch to see what happens. It sounds like you have an electrical problem rather than a cooling problem. When you got the CHEC, did the engine lose power? Something like that will happen if a tank bag nudges the kill switch or the side stand gets nudged by a boot for example. Check the side stand switch to make sure it isn't right on the edge of contact and it's getting fully depressed when the stand is up.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Ghosly Fault

Thanks Greywolfe. I'm sure it is an electrical gremelin. What worries me is the dealer AND Suzuki can't come up with an answer, and they found no fault codes when hooked to the On Board Diagnosics.
The bike does not stop running when this happens. I may have confused the issue when I stated the on/off condition. That was me saying I swithced the bike off , then started it back up when it "appeared" to be running hot. I will however check the sequence you suggested. Again, thanks for the advice.

If the problem was at a switch, the engine would have shut down. The display is getting a wrong code from the ECM. If there was a fault code stored, the clock would provide an FI code rather than a CHEC. I would suspect the ECM at this point. There is a procedure at http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php...cseen.html#new for clearing the ECM that I've never heard of before but might be worth a try.

CHEC indication occurs when the display doesn't see the ECM through the communication line from the ECM to the instrument display (i.e if the ECM is turned off via the kill switch, the display will show CHEC). Since the bike continues to run, it is likely not an ECM fault - but more likely a wiring fault - specifically the harness connector in the left front fairing?

That makes sense. Rather than the ECM sending the wrong signal or no signal, it isn't getting the signal to the panel. Besides, ECM errors are rare and problems with connectors are common. The large connector in the left fairing pocket and the connector to the instrument cluster are possibilities. The black wire withe a green stripe appears to be a likely connection.

Thumbs up Ghostly temp fault

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking at these connectors over the weekend. I'm riding this bike in the Redwing19 Iron Butt Butt Burner in Virginia next weekend. Annoying as this is I'm still going to ride. The bike is not running hot. I carry a handheld IR thermometer with me for just such occurences. It works well and takes the guess work out ot the equation. I'll definetley post what I find if I can cure the problem.

Ghostly temperature indication solved

Thanks to Grey Wolfe and others the mysterious faulty temperature indication is solved. The "CHEK" indication at the top of the display does indeed mean the ECM is not communicating with the instrument panel. I checked the large multi pin connector under the left fairing, and it was fine. I pulled the instrument panel out and low and behold, the connector to the panel fell out without me touching it. It had evidently workied itself loose OR someone had been under the dash and accidently dislodged it. Once pushed back in everything works as expected. I was also getting a faulty fuel level siganl at times, all associated with this plug. What really blows my mind is the local dealer AND Suzuki didn't seem to know why I was having the problem. They agreed it was a faulty reading but didn't have a solution. You would think they would have some basic guidelines to troubleshoot by. They did check all the voltages from the ECT sensor and they were good. I guess they don;t want to "think" a problem through, but had rather black box troubleshoot. Can't wait to go tell them what I found in my garage and with the help of this forum.

Thanks Greywolf. Wile on the way to Miller for the WSB races I would lose my gas and temp gauges and "chec" would appear on the panel. This would happen sporadically at first, and then all the time for the rest of the trip.
After reading your comments last night , I went out to the shop and cleaned the instrument connection with contact cleaner and presto, a working panel.

On a different subject, where do you download the map in your sig?
