Help - Oil Pressure Light Came on.

Hi,

After a weekend of very hard adventures riding (mud, river crossings, and very rough terrain) in Lesotho I rode back home, about 450km. We rode hard mostly at 160-170km/h. I overtook a Jaguar and the guy floored his car, so I just gunned my DL and passed him. At about 190km/h (speedo speed) the oil light came on. I grabbed the clutch and killed the engine and pulled off the road. I saw now oil leaks and the oil level was ok. I turned the ignition on and the oil light went out when I started the engine as normal. I rode the rest of the way at 160km/s and no problems.

What could have caused this?

Thanx

I assume you are refering to the red light in the middle of the dash. When that light comes on, the clock will alternate between the time and FI. This indicates a trouble code. There are several codes that can occur without the engine shutting down. When you turned your bike off and back on again, you erased the code.

My bike has done that twice, but unfortunatly I was unprepared to capture the code. You have to access dealer mode (must remove the seat) while the bike is still running and the light is on.

It may or may not ever do it again. Keep a spare key and paper clip handy so next time so you can capture the code.

Cheers

ps: its very helpful to others if you place your year/model in your signature.

This morning coming home from work, my light came on again (3rd time) and the FI flashing.

This time I was prepared, having my extra key along.

After accessing Dealer Mode, I recieved C 31 trouble code. This is the gear position switch. According to the manual, each gear position sends a different voltage output to the ECM.

With my mileage, I imagine the switch has just worn out after several zillion shifts. With a ride to Yukon/NWT on the horizon, I shall change out the switch right aways.

Cheers

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thanks for supplying that link GW.

The Zook manual gives no explanation why the gear position switch provides a different voltage per gear to the ECU. I notice absolutaly no change in performance/mileage/function and so far it has only come on 3 times, each time within a few minutes of running on a cold morning, and only once 6th gear was reached. My initial impression of this switch was mearly to ensure the bike couldnt be put into gear with the side stand down but there must be other functions included.

Cheers

The gear position switch is more important for the DL1000. It has restrictions in just about every gear except 4th.
