Removing Fairings

I know there is a way to remove the fairings as one piece, but I don't know how - would anoyone be so kind as to explain exactly how this is done?

Check out these instructions. They are for fuel tank removal but he does remove most of the fairings at the same time. If you are talking the lights/instrument clusters, that's a few more steps. In general, no, not in one piece, as there are at least 3 pieces to the fairing.

Some have only removed the connections between the cowling and the tank and radiator, separated the wiring connector, removed the two bolts between the forward frame and main frame, then spread the cowling sides and removed the front as a unit. That seems unwieldy to me though.

My goal is to remove the tank - can this be done without removing any of the fairings?

The cowlings have to be at least spread to remove the tank. I won't take the chance of scratching anything so I take the cowlings off.

I've done it several times, but I'm not too worried about scratches either.

Remove all bolts that hold plastics to the tank
Remove chevron shaped trim piece at the top of the tank
gently life plastics from around the threaded fitting on the tank
remove 12mm lower tank bolt
remove pivot bolt at the top of tank
carefully work the tank out of the plastic.

It only takes a couple minutes to have the fairing off. Not hard at all.

Never met a dog I didn't like, a machine I couldn't break, or a woman I couldn't tick off.
