Headlights Out

07 12K miles. This morning cranked up as usual, but no headlights, huh???
Never heard of this one. Didn't have time to troubleshoot, needed to get to work. Anyhow, anyone else had this happen?

Oh, and the left turn signal would not work either. I'm dling a schematic to see if I can find a common between the left turn signal, and the headlights.

A couple of possibilities here, but try these 2 most common fault areas:

First the plug inside the left fairing, inside a large rubber cover, easy to get at.

Second (and the problem I had) is the plug on the backside of the radiator shroud. To get at it, you must remove the tank. I bypassed the offending connector and then installed an Eastern Beaver headlight relay to kit to ensure it never happens again.

I should add I guess, as a third, the headlights are fused, so check them as well.

Cheers!

ps: please put your year/model in your signature line, it really helps avoid confusion.

I'll take a look at when I get home. Mine is an 07 WeeStrom, just tried again putting in DL650 this time, but I don't see it showing up anywhere. I went to Control Panel, "Edit Your Details" , then down to "Model V-Strom Owned" and inserted DL650.

Anybody would have to check your profile to find that information. If it was in your signature, it would be easier to tell.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Sorry, might help if I read a little slower. Signature fixed, at least it worked in the testing area.

I realize I need to order a manual, but does someone have a pdf for a 07, or newer wiring schematic. The manual will probably take a couple weeks to get and I'd like to properly troubleshoot the fault. According to the 04 schematic there is no common fault which would take out both headlights, and the left blinker (front and rear) and not take out the right blinker. My best guess is a plug/connector in really bad shape? The one in the left fairing looks very clean and unburnt at least from the rear. I need to service plugs, and air filter anyway so I will be removing tank, so hopefully I'll kill two birds at once.

One more question, Eastern Beaver, looks like he's in Japan? Looks like some very well put together kits. How long does his products take to ship?

Symptoms Change

Ok, I've had company so not much time, but ran out this AM, and notice the low beams work, no hi beams, left blink never works. While on low beams I noticed if I touch the hi/lo switch, and wiggle just slightly I loose low beams also. Starting to seem like my problems may be at the left switch housing. Of course 12K, 12mo. warranty ran out a few days ago.

head lights dont work

when i start my bike the headlights dont work, if i push the starter button with the engine running , after 5 or six trys the lights come on , could i spray something like contact cleaner in there? . some times the lights just go out , then i hit the starter switch and they come back on. suzuki switches kinda suck . sometimes it takes me five minites to get the bike started with the ignition that wont go from off to on .

Figure likely a new left side switch cluster. I keep telling people put the Relay Kit on BEFORE something like this happens. However, one of the big connectors is also a possibility. You're going to have to do some troubleshooting to determine if it's the switch or a connector.

I suggest finding the HI/LO switch input and jumper it to the LO beam output. The LO beams should work. Try jumper it to the HI beam output. The HI beams should work. If these tests get both beams working, then your switch is definitely shot.

Trouble is the VStrom lights are nice and bright right up until the end.

What kills things usually, and this is my guess, is the flash to pass button. That button puts 20A of current through all them little wires, switches, and connectors.
