15000 mile service. Wee II

Day one

Spent the day doing a major 15k mile service on the Wee Strom 650 will continue tomorrow. Today I checked the valves, replaced the plugs, new air filter. Tomorrow new oil and filter, brake bleed, and new coolant. And of course will finish it off with lubing all the pivot points on the machine, and checking for loose hardware. As far as valve clearances go, I did not have to change any shims this time. Cylinder one (front) the valve clearances were right in the middle of Spec. Intakes were at .015 mm and the exhausts were at .023mm. Cylinder two (rear) the intakes were at .015mm, middle of spec, but the exhaust were at .021mm, on the tight side of the specification. Still in spec but might have to adjust at the next check @ 30k miles. All in all pretty easy. Of course having a platform lift really makes working on ones motorcycle a pleasure.

Day two

Radiator is back on with new coolant, Oil and filter change is done. Tank is reinstalled and now it is time for a coffee break. Will finish up the brakes today and then button her up. Might get a chance to take the Wee out for a test ride tomorrow, or the next day.

Afternoon of Day two. Bike is all buttoned up and ready for a test ride in the morning. No fasteners short, no fasteners left over. All is good.

Tune up or lack of

Replace plugs at 15,000?My Wee has the factory plugs with 56,000 and starts,runs,and every thing else like day one. My last car had 104,000 when I replaced the plugs just to be doing it and had I pulled them first would never have got the new ones.With todays elc. system we change them way too often IMO.
Now back in the stone age when I had my first new car a 1969 RoadRunner 383,335 hp. it would start missing a little over 100mph and a fresh set of plugs and look at points and lube lobe would make it happy. You below 35 may not know what points are? Had my 011 Wee to over 100 shown this AM at the usual place on the way home from meeting with the other old coots.If they ain't broke and still running good I keep on riding.

You fooled me big time after looking at your age! Younger than me by four years but no kid!Even some of the ones I ride with the most like you spend lots keeping harm away by fixing stuff all the time.They give me used parts sometimes all so. Have fun making it like new again.

The satisfaction of doing it yourself and knowing it's done right=priceless.

2015 Victory Cross Country bought new 7/11/15 (dyno tuned 118hp 116tq)
If it's not broken, make it better
My take on oil: Name brand, wet clutch compatible.....BAM good to go.

Had the plugs might as well put them in. Manufactures say to replace every 15k or so for the emission rules. Doubt if I will replace them again as they are Iridium plugs. Should go for at least 50K miles. All though it is nice to pull them out and check to see how the engine is running. And to keep the plugs from seizing to the engine block. I do like to follow the maint. schedule at a reasonable time interval. Became a habit when I was working as a Biomedical Equipment Engineer. Don't want to have to work on the bike in the middle of BFE at night in a blinding rain storm. Retired now and the only thing I turn a wrench on is my motorcycles.

Yes I know what points and condensers are. Cut my teeth on VW's when I was in my early 20's. Yea I know, along time ago.

Old VWs I had two a 36hp 1958 and a 40hp 61. Fastest motor pull made IMO. Had the wife time me on last one I pulled. Jack up high enough to drop out bottom.Four bolts,two top,two bottom,unhook gas and elc. and silde out bottom on board and block set up. That's with all hand tools 22 minutes.Bet the shops with air tools and stands could do them in two minutes? It takes me 22 minutes some AMs after being on roof or under the house the day before to just walk like a normal person now!
Think Colorado is your home now?015 trip of eight days was one of best for me.Such nice parks,people and so many great small towns.I liked it more than our Alaska trip.Best water I ever drank in any state all so.

Yep. Reminds me of When I was changing and rebuilding VW motors in the Base Auto Craft shop. Did one for a girl friend of my wife while the girls were visiting one evening. Change it in about 30 mins. in the drive way of our apt. All with basic hand tools. Of course I was in my early 20's then. Now I take my time as I am retired and old and don't need to be in a hurry all the time.


Yes, Colorado is home. Will never move again ............Unless I decide to go back to the European Alps... Fat chance that will happen. Will be taking a Moto tour later this summer over there.

I was reading through this thread, and was gonna mention it if nobody else had. Can't believe it was the last post!

2007 Wee. Blue. Bought at 5K miles. Sold at 32K+ miles. Gone but not forgotten.

2012 Wee2 Adventure. Black. Bought at 26K miles. Now 43K+. Love it!

The final peice of the 15000 mile service. The test ride.

Today I got the Wee out and did the test ride. 6 hours and 160 miles of testing. As if I need an excuse to GO RIDE. NO parts fell off the bike and it did not break down.
Rode a lot of my favorite twisties today. also stopped and had breakfast at the Deckers Cafe. Rode along the South Platte river for a while, Then headed to Foxton and on to check in at the Platte Hotel, as I have not been down there in about over a year. Passed some little know railroad history. Then up to Conifer and the high road to Brook Forest. Back down in to Old Evergreen and down the hill to Kittredge, along Parmalee Gulch to 285 and home. 165 miles on another drop dead beautiful Spring Colorado Day. attached link is my route for today.
