Troubleshooting fuel pump and lesson learned (again)
In anticipation of spring (the winters are long in MN), I removed my fuel tank this morning to check my air box for critter activity. This was the first time I had done it on my DL650, and I wasn't sure of the exact procedure.
All went okay (only a few insect parts in the air box) and once I got all the plastic and tank back in place I decided to start it up to make sure everything was in running order. When I turned the key on, the fuel pump made no noise, and the 'CHECK' indicator was on the instrument panel. Thinking I had not correctly connected the wire, I proceeded to spend the next hour removing all of the plastic, lifting the tank, and checking out the fuel line connection and the wiring.
Everything appeared to be fine, but still no fuel pump noise when I turned the key. I've checked the wire connected to the clutch, and made sure the shifter was in neutral. By this time there is a lot of 'sighing' going on in the garage and the dog decided she would be happier in the backyard.
In desperation I turn to the owners manual hoping for a troubleshooting guide. One of the first things mentioned is to check the kill switch. Sure enough, in dinking around while removing the tank and plastic I had hit the kill switch.
Lesson learned: always check the simple things first!
