Extreme Hot exhaust suspect one cyl dead

2007, 650, 60,000 mi
rode for 2 minutes no prob, got to a stop light and idled norm. I left the stop light and eng lost power, barely able to accelerate as if running on one cylinder, had about a mile to go to get home so nursed it for a mile. Started to smell smoke in driveway. The exhaust was so hot it melted the plastic shield around it. Im suspecting either the cylinder wasnt firing and raw fuel was porting thru the exhaust and burning or maybe the exhaust valve stuck open....any thoughts??

I think the 2007 model has a catalytic converter in the exhaust. If so, and it does sound like a cylinder has dropped, the raw fuel air mixture is being ignited by the converter and causing the smoke and intense heat. Not likely a valve issue. But it could be one of many other things. It is very possible that the converter has been damaged by the excess fuel, so be aware of that. Even if the problem is figured out, it may be down on power due to restrictions in the exhaust from collapsed converter.

All V-Stroms have cats. Run a lot of unburned fuel into them and that's what happens. A non running cylinder will have a cold header followed by a hot catalytic converter.

Thanks, Turns out no spark to rear Cyl, ignition coil replaced.
Any good links for used wee parts ? (exhaust heat shield, melted)

I spoke too soon, its not the rear ignition coil.
With new plugs and leads installed, fired it up (barley) but only the front exhaust header got warm. so I determined the rear is not firing.
I pulled the leads off the rear cylinder and slaved in some good spare plugs and grounded them against the engine then hit the start switch...No Spark.
I did the same test with the front coil leads and saw good spark so..... i removed the front coil and slaved it in to the rear position and hit the starter...again NO spark. Ive concluded its not the rear ignition coil, but something upstream from that, i dont have the manual can anyone tell me whats up-line from the rear ignition coil for me to check (a component that would only control the rear cylinder) ?

here's the results of testing the continuity on my coils
Front coil primary 2.5 Ohms
Front coil secondary 32K Ohms
Rear coil primary 2.5 Ohms
Rear coil secondary 25K Ohms ( the low limit)

Up stream form the coil....ECM?

somehow I think its a chafed wire, or a melted plug. Unplug the big main one under the fairing on the left side.....look for corrosion or burnt terminals. If you have all the tupperware off, chase that coil lead checking everything it connects to all the way to the ECM and battery.

Check the yellow/red wire for power. That color feeds the two coils from a crimp connection inside the harness. In the past, some bikes have gotten water to work its way into the harness and corrode that connector.
