Do I need new spark plugs already

I have 700 miles on my 650 V-Strom and am due for the 600 mile first service. I asked my local Suzuki dealer how much is would cost and was told it is a 3 hour procedure and would cost $207 (3X69/hour) plus parts. The dealership where I bought the bike, which is in another state from where I live, told me that it takes 2 hours and would cost $140 (2X70/hour) plus parts. I called back the shop near by me and questioned the service manager why they are charging more than the dealer I bought it from. He told me that they do things above and beyond what my owner's manual mentions for the 600 mile interval, including new spark plugs. NEW SPARK PLUGS?? The manual says they need to be inspected at 4000 miles with no mention of checking them at 600 miles. Am I being scammed by my local dealer who's trying to convince me that I need new spark plugs? He told me that Suzuki reps train the dealer mechanics to perform certain procedures are needed that aren't necessarily required by the Maintenance Chart in the owner's manual. He also said that his shop is much more thorough than required, thus justifying the extra hour of service. What gives? How long did you go before changing the spark plugs on your Wee-Strom? I'd like to hear back from you all before I take it in to be worked on and before I might be swindled out of an extra $69 plus parts. Thanks

Spark Plugs Already

WOW !!!! Inspect the plugs or replace them. Not in this lifetime. That is really beyond belief. You have taken ownership of a modern fuel injected motorcycle with neat little electronics to keep it happy for more than 600 miles. I really doubt that the plugs would fail at the 20,000 mile mark. Modern machines, both bikes and cars are built to run veeerrry reliably with no fuss. Change the oil and filter, lube the chain and ride it. If there was an ashphalt road around the equator the Vstrom would probably do it without a hiccup or cough. The dealer must be trying to make up for his Enron stock. I am willing to bet he doesn't have many return customers. Ride with the shiny side up.

Ditto. New plugs at 500 miles is absurd. $69 to replace plugs is absurd. You're talking 5 minutes if the tank is off and, maybe, $10 in parts. FWIW, my dealer does the 500 mile service, per the service manual, for $50.

The only parts for the 500 mile service should be new oil and filter ($15 - tops).

Thanks guys! I decided to take my business to an independent shop that only wants two hours labor for the service, consistent with the dealership I got it at. Everyone there spends a lot of time explaining things to me and so far hasn't tried to push any work or parts on me. Again, your input is much appreciated. Daniel

i got 9k miles on my stock plugs and i dont plan on taking them out anytime soon.

FWIW, I pulled my plugs at 7500 miles to change them per the 2004 LitreStrom manual. They looked perfect and were still gapped (both electrodes) within spec. After going to the trouble of taking the tank and other pars off and draining the radiator to swing it forward, I did change them. On my K6 Strom, I don't think I'll bother unless it happens to be winter and there's three feet of snow on the ground.

'06 DL-1000
'06 KLX 250S (more fun than people should be allowed to have)
'72 SL-350 K2 (bump start only)
'72 CL-350 (on injured reserve list at this time)

I guess it's better to bend a valve in Missoula than to lose your mind in Bozeman.

If I had a Suzuki cage and the manual said change plugs at 7500 miles I would drive through their showroom window with much vigor. Their cages and bikes probably share a lot of technology so why the difference for bikes ? As consumers we demand a reliable well built bike, but the maintenance schedule should be a lot less demanding, or are they trying to make up for a reasonable purchase price ?

Same here, but I went to the 11000 mile service and changed the plugs and air filter on my 650..
I think you can go 25000 easy w/o changing the plugs. Air filter too, if you only ride on the street. The tank removal is easy once you understand the economy of the plastic fasteners and filter out most of the unneccessary fairing removal steps
BTW, this is the same manual that wants you to change the oil filter at 600 then not 'til 11000. Oil only at 4000 and 7500. Go figger. :roll:

Stromette *highly* recommends checking that your plugs are correctly installed. One of my was loose coming from the factory.
