Changing plugs and filter element.

Just got back from a long trip down to Utah/Arizona. My chain and sprockets were gone on my way back. I stopped in Boise, Id and got it cleaned, tightened and lubed. It was gonna take 2 days to get a new chain and sprockets. Anyway, I'm back home in Alberta and the bike is going in for new chain and sprockets on Friday. In the meantime I decided to change the plugs and filter element. It's an '03 DL1000. I'm having a bitch of a time getting at the plugs. I've removed all the clips on the front cowling. (broke about 3 of them before I found the trick to removing them) I removed the bolt at the bottom of the Rad and according to the manual you slide the Rad forward and access the plug. Problem is, the Rad only moves forward about a 1/2" and it's still next to impossible to get my fingers on the plug, let alone a spark plug wrench. Any tricks to getting at the plugs? Any help is appreciated.

The forward plug is the tough one, and the radiator will only go forward about the amount you state. What I do is pull it forward, slip a bungee on the bolt hole and leave it pulled forward. Then pull the plug boot, usually need a screwdriver to pop the edge up and kind of work it around. At which point you can pull it free of the plug.

The toughest part is that the plug sits extremely deep in the head and if you can actually touch it your doing much better than I. The only plug wrench I have found that will work is the one included in the stock tool kit. But this wrench will work well just takes a bit of fiddling and a 14mm wrench or socket to turn it out. Not an easy operation. I had a tough time reaching in and pulling the plug cap off the front cylinder sparkplug when I winterized my bike after last season. Must use supplied plug wrench once you get the cap off. I am sure it will be easier the second time around.
