Mileage after running out of gas

Ok, I blew it yesterday and ran out of gas. Thought I had enough to get there and did not come close.

I am looking for info on two different issues here regarding mileage:

First, I consistently get at least 200 miles, and up to 225 miles, from a tank of gas. This situation left me dry after about 190 miles. Could be 'cause I was haulin' ass so I can understand a variance in the mileage here. I also have a other than stock rear tire but it has been on for about 6k miles. I know there will be some variance for wear and understand that possibly causing the minor differences seen in mileage. Any other input out there?

Second, since this incident I have fueled up 4 times and only get 100-150 miles from a tank of gas. The first time I filled up after the running out I got 90 miles before the gauge started its blinking. About 120 on each tank after and I took it really easy on the last tank and I am at 140 miles with the light just starting to blink. This is a good bit off the mark as to what I had before.

Anyone had an issue or familiar with what might cause this problem and sudden dron in mileage. I have about 14K miles on the bike and road about 700 miles yesterday so I got a pretty good idea of things in my experience yesterday.

Just a heads up, I rode about 1000 miles the week before and got about 200 miles between fill ups and could have gone a few more miles but I usually don't push it on the highway. Odometer is reasonably accurate, within 3%. Nothing too serious there.

Any ideas or help would be good here. I think I will disconnect the battery for a while to see if that resets anything and makes it better. Thanks for the help.

Th one time I was pushing it I was also bucking a very big head wind. I ran out when I thought I had about another 15 to 20 miles left. Lesson learned, don't push it and the Stroms are not the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road.

Assuming that your gauge is working correctly, you are still putting the same amount in when it starts blinking? It almost sounds like you might have a leak. If the bike is running ok and the mileage has suddenly dropped rather dramaticly I would have to think you're losing fuel somewhere. The earliest I've seen mine start blinking is 179. I have a PCIII with the new map loaded and it was very windy during that tank.

Just filled up again this morning. Light started to blink at 140. Put in 4.7 Gallons. This last tank was ridden a bit conservative so I expected better than the other bad ones, but still not even close to where it should be. Now that I am back to town and doing everyday type riding, this next tank will give me better info to make a decision with. I still expect what I have been seeing, a shortage in the mileage area, but I will take a close look for leaks and other signs in the next day or so.

I checked the ODO with mile markers over 100 miles and I consistently put in more than 4 gallons on each fill up so that should verify the amounts used. This still could leave about a 10% variance in mileage for the amount of fuel, but nothing that should account for 50-100 miles?

The early numbers of about 100 miles were with a bit of wind, but what kind of wind cuts mileage in half? That is why I went for a few more tanks to gather a little more data.

I think I will stop by a dealer this week and see if they can check for any codes or check out the ECU.

WIsixfitty: Did you notice anything after you ran out? Anything different?

Keep your ideas coming as I would like to fix this soon. Who can afford to burn extra gas these days?

No I did'nt notice anything different after runnig out. fwiw I am on a 650 and the trip mileage at the time was about 240.

I'm just lucky I was about 5 miles from home and my wife was also home at the time. :P

I ran my 650 out of gas on purpose once just to find out how far you could go with both indicators flashing.

This did not affect my lileage in any way.

I'd have to look at my notes at home. CB 21.5, Givi bags and aftermarket knuckle gaurds. I never get the mileage some people claim usually about 40-45 MPG US.

If I remember correctly at a conservative 65 mph I ran about 65 miles before going dead.

Becuase it's fuel injection there is NO warning, it just dies.

Here is some info that may help and provide resolution to some of us out there.

After running through about 6 tanks of gas, I am now back to normal as far as mileage. Got 209 miles before the light started blinking and filled up 5 miles later. Took 5.0 gallons so that works out more than 40 mpg and I drove like a sane person most of the time.

This got me to thinking what may have caused the problem and why it would gradually work its way out???

I am guessing here but this may be it. After running out of gas, I used a few used quart size oil bottles to carry the gas I needed back to the bike.

As there is only oil residue and a very small amount of oil left in the bottles, how much harm can that cause. No big deal right?

Well, it is my guess that this small amount of oil MAY HAVE caused a potential problem that affected mileage. As I saw no significant decrease in power, I suspect it had little affect on the actual mechanics of the engine and ignition or spark. I would also rule this out as many bikes burn more oil than I could have got in the fuel without significant problems every day from blow by and sloppy rings.

It could of however had some affect on the catalytic converter or more likely the Oxygen sensor or FI system as it may have sensed some type of foreign material in the fuel or may have made the sensor dirty or make false readings. I would lean in this direction but I do not have any technical data to back that up. I am also not really smart on the FI system but this is my best guess.

If anyone can enlighten me and any others watching this thread please do. Thanks!
