DL650 Idle Hammer?

A funny thing happened at my Suzuki dealer the other day. I brought my DL650 in to pick up a warranty part and have it installed. When I started up my bike to leave, their mechanic mentioned that my bike seemed to have a pretty loud knock at idle. I told him I had pretty much learned to live with the sound since it had done it from the time I bought it. I have over 8,000 miles on the bike and it runs perfect. He then asked if I would mind if he pulled off the right clutch cover to have a look, I'd need to leave the bike for a few days. Well, to make a long story short, I did leave the bike there for him to check into. I've heard of the DL1000 having the "idle hammer condition" so I suspect he thinks my 650 has the same problem. I've read on several of the DL1000 boards about the scissor gear being either stuck or not functioning and causing a knock at idle, so I'm curious. Has anyone else experienced a knocking sound at idle with their DL650? I don't even know if the 650 uses this same gear as the 1000. As soon as I get my bike back I will post the results here.

No problems here, over 4 thousand miles. None of the fuel injection/ running problems of the liter bike ever. Only problem is lugging engine, my fault when it happens. Did have some surging in 1st gear in the 3-4K range. After 4k service has disappeared. They did a throttle body sync at this time.

About 6,600 miles and not a problem with anything.
At this point it runs better than new.
I watched the SV650 boards in the past and never noticed anyone complaining about this. Keep in mind that the 650 and 1000 have nothing in common when it comes to engines or transmissions. The 650 is from the SV side and the 1000 is from the TL side.
I had a Peugeot 504 that had a knock. I got it with about 30,000 miles and ran it until about 125,000 miles and never had a problem. Knock never did go away.

I have owned VWs in the past that had bad leak down problems with hydraulic lifters, an '85 Quantum and an '88 fox. On cold starts they would tap like crazy for about 5 mins. then finally pump up. It had even stated in shop manuals for both cars that this was normal. My friends fox did not make the sound at all. I guess it goes to show that a noise doesn't necessarly mean there is a problem. I'm guessing this is going to be the case with my bike since it has had this sound for so many miles. Dan

No, No Knock on my 650 I have 5000+ Miles

I have ridden a 1000 several times (my buddy has one)...
His Bike does not have the faulty clutch, but I have found that the 1000 is very unforgiving
if your under 4500 rpm it's Lugging ... or it feels like it.

I do not like it ... thats why I bought the 650..

To me the 650 is very smooth... I do feel a little bit of vibe at 6, 7 thousand rpm but I know I need to re do my TBS.. last time I did it I just synced the bodies and skipped the TPS.... I am thinking that has something to do with it.. cuz it wasnt thtere before I synced it :twisted: :twisted:

My Nephew has a 2000 SV 650.. with 18,000 Miles, Holy Crap is that a fun bike to ride... The engine is SMOOTH AS SILK.. probably the smoothest feeling engine I have ever ridden..

We discussed the differences in our bikes and we noted that the DL has a different (Bigger) crank..? So that may be why the SV seems smoother.. also his has 18K Miles...

I have noticed this bike and my last bike both loosen up and feel better with time and miles..... So

So that is my analysis....

Only other thing .. On my DL I thought the gear box felt sticky..
Changed to AmsOil pure synth... this makes the engine and trans feel smoother for sure.. 8) :lol: :P

While my bike was at the shop the mechanic had me come in and showed me the components clutch basket, primary gear and bearings including the main shaft bearing and he said everything was within spec. He did however do a TBS which has changed the tone of the sound some. Awhile back at the DL650 Yahoo group a new member posted about his bike having the exact same knocky-noises that my bike has, he even had a reply from someone that also has the same sounds with his 650. The message no. for them is # 7349 and #7376 for anyone interested. I kinda think it is a more or less thing, same as with the DL1000. I agree the SV650 is much smoother than my DL and aside from a lighter crank it uses a slipper type clutch which could be why I have never heard of the SV making knocky-noises at idle. The SV seems to idle smoother and doesn't have the DLs thump-thump-thump sound, Maybe this is why some DLs have knocky-noises at idle. Anyhow I absolutely love this bike and plan on keeping her a long long time.

sure sounds confusing. I would have sworn that there were NO differences between the SV and the DL650 except Mapping and Ratio. Nothing else drivetrain-related. To my knowledge there is no reason why the two should have sharply different characteristics.

I have only ridden two DL650's: mine, and the one I test-rode which had a few hundreds of miles on it. I remembered thinking that the tester was a lot more rattley than what I expected, especially at idle/neutral. Mine is the same way: to me its noisy, rattling [somewhere between a sharp tap and a knock] just sitting there, but as soon as you let out the clutch that stops and other noises take over. I was reading a remark re: windshields where one brit, after getting a GOOD windshield, noted how noisy this little engine is. Taken altogether, its a noisemaker that I guess can be more exagerrated due to tuning issues.

Yeah the DL has a different CRANK... they say it's to give it more mid range power. I beleive it is a lighter crank than the SV but I am not 100% sure..

Look it up on the web you might be able to find the technical details on it..

Maybe you have a different issue ? loose exhaust at the head or in need of a TBS/TPS?
