mudflap pix

Made a custom mudflap for the front fender today. The photo on the right is the original mudflap (purchased from the local Canadian Tire for $12). They come in pairs, so actual cost was probably only about $6 and change if you include the cost of 4 rivets and 4 washers. The finished product extends the fender by 4 inches, which should keep the crap out of the oil cooler.

I cut the mudflap down with a knife and scored two vertical lines on the back of the mudflap so that it would bend to follow the lines of the fender. I drilled 4 holes, two higher up on the sides of the fender, and two lower down on the main body of the fender. There are small washers on the inside of the rivets, less than 1/2 inch in diameter. I decided to affix the mudflap to the outside of the fender so that the run-off would stay inside the fender well. I think the finished look is fairly clean.

Installation took about an hour. Most of that time was spent drinking a glass of merlot and thinking. Actually, this post took longer...

Thanks to Water Warrior for the inspiration.

I would think that a pinot noir is better suited for a mudflap farkle. The pinot has a softer, slighty fruity aftertaste that would blend well with the stronger esters from the butyl rubber.

Just my .02...and don't even think of using a white wine when installing any dark colored farkle.

A pint of Guinness would also do the trick, I think.

 You would not want to do it with a Pinot Grigio, a light, crisp white wine, especially if you were to get tomatoes thrown at you for making an ugly farkle since you would want to avoid having anything acitic like tomatoes or citrus fruits since the Pinot Grigio is fairly acitic itself.

Hmmm, I'll take that one with a grain of salt and follow it with tequila.

You ought to have a spare kicking around somewhere. Try a different design.

I rode with it for the first time today (in the frigging snow!). Absolutely fantastic. I can't believe how much it cuts down the spray and road grime.

And I don't think it looks half bad, from a distance anyway.

pssssssst: BC-Bruce is talking about a ride up your way soon.
