Windstrom installed.... Buffeting still a problem
Well I couldn't take the buffeting from the stock shield anymore. It beat my head up so bad I had a horrible headache. So I read that the Windstrom was supposed to be the best so I broke down and spent the cash and got it.
First thing out of the box I was already disappointed, it says in there instructions that riders who are 5'8" may still have problems with the Windstrom because of where they sit. I was like friggin great I'm 5'8" I wish someone would have told me before I spent $200, the ad should say anyone that height need not apply. But I said what the heck and installed it anyway.
To start with the only way I can see over it is in the lowest position, position2 puts the top right in the middle of my sightline and 3 is just slightly better so 1 it is. I did the tilt method to see if that would help but everything buffets my head. It's like the turbulance is right at the top of my helmet no matter what I do (except shrink way down low or lean forward).
I did however discover something interesting with the shield in the lowest position and cruising at around 75mph if I move my head to the left about 2" I get clean air, no more buffeting and it quiets right down. Move back to center and my head feels like it's being used as a basketball. That got me thinking that if I could tilt the windshield down even more and get more clean air aimed at my helmet it would smooth out. So I'm going to order the Madstad tomorrow to see if I can make the pair work.
I also learned that if you set the cruise (I have a vista cruise) at 75mph and then take your hands off the bars (bike is super stable) then put your elbows up 90 degrees and put your right fist into the palm of your left hand (think of a karate stance with your fist in your palm and elbows out 90 degrees) the turbulance goes completely away as well. As soon as I pull my elbows back down and put my hands on the bars the buffeting is back. Kinda weird huh.
Seems like that's the only downside to a totally rightous bike, but man it's a killer for sure. If I could get this damn buffeting issue under control I'd be set. I just installed my Kimpex heated grips, hand guards come in tomorrow and a seat is on the way just gotta fix the buffeting now. Here's hoping the Madstad fixes it.
