SKB hard luggage on DIY mount (L2 Wee)

40-year motorcyclist, new Wee owner here, picked it up just before Christmas, downsizing from my ’04 Connie. I really like the Wee to say the least.

Needing to get luggage mounted ASAP for an already planned trip, I moved the SKB brand (Pelican type) cases from the Connie to the Wee. SKB cases are among those used by Caribou and I like ‘em because they offer a lock built-in to the latch like ‘normal’ luggage and had a sizes that work well for my gear.

This is a bolted-on installation (no quick release for the bags) for simplicity and rigidity. The OEM rack is removed; the top case in this initial installation is above the seat barely enough to allow seat removal.

The back of the side bags have a full-width/full-height ‘sandwich’ of 1/8” al plate inside and 3/16” al plate outside, with button head SS bolts from the inside tapped into the outside plate at the corners. Bolts then penetrate all of that and through the ¼” thick steel strap of the mount that runs from the passenger peg holes up to a 7/8” OD x 1/8” wall tube that spans across the back and bolts down to the OEM rack mount points.

The platform for the top case keeps it all square and rigid, eliminating the necessity of a ‘hoop’ across the back like on most aftermarket racks. Remove four bolts and the whole assembly lifts of the bike so I can reinstall the OEM rack for normal riding between camping trips.

Side cases – SKB 3i-1914N-8 (36 liters each)
Top case – SKB 3i-2217-8 (49 liters)
Total width of installation – 40”

I’m an olde phart and without apology carry a decadent camping rig (Kermit chair, large Timberline tent, comfy sleeping pad, etc, etc) for my solo trips. This rig lets me keep everything dry and secure for ventures off the bike to museums, walkabouts, etc.

The luggage is mounted well-forward for best handling (my “perfect passenger”). This is a 99.9% street bike for me and I ride in all weather, so other mods already installed include Michelin Pilot Road 3’s, Rick’s fork brace and Madstad mount/windshield. I’ve also transferred the heatroller from the Connie for my liner/gloves and lowered the Wee by 18mm at both ends with links I fabbed myself.

Heading 1800 miles to Key West with this rig in a few days on a mixed hotel/camping trip, looking forward to a few weeks of warmer weather.

I mounted my Sea Horse bags the same way. I like the look of the bags horizontal to the perpendicular. The slanted look isn't as appealing and you can't rest a coffee mug on it well. Other than getting my helmet in the JC whitless box I like the look of the top box you have. Yours is a lot sturdier too, The JC box will break easily when tested.

I have the Pelican side cases too and love the look and build of them. I haven't used them yet as, dang, I just got the bike at Thanksgiving and there's snow on the ground here. Yes, I'm jealous. Have a great trip.

Just think “KISS” … maybe these pics from the photo-session will help. It’s just two pieces of ¼” x 1-1/2” steel strap straight from the 10mm holes already OEM below the passenger pegs to the tube laying across the OEM 8mm rack bolt holes on the tailpiece. The straps lay on the outside of the peg mounts. Two full welds at the tube/strap joints, four bolt holes in the 'rack', nylock nuts at the peg mounts. A bit of time with an angle grinder to shape the straps to fit around the OEM peg mounts at the bottom and eyeball a curve at the top.

There’s an aluminum angle (2”x2”) at the top of the back plate of each bag. For this quick-and-nasty fab to get on the trip, I used a piece of 10mm Russian birch ply I had on hand to make a platform for the top case. 8mm button heads through the ply into tapped holes in the al angle.

At the bottom of the strap in this pic you see the bolt through the OEM passenger peg mount hole; above the tail light is the top of the capscrew into the OEM rack mounts under the tailpiece; visible is the 3/16" al plate between the ribs on the back of the SKB case (it is tapped to receive the bolts through the inside plate and they're flush so you don't see them projecting in this view):

The bar that appears to come out behind the peg in this pic is the centerstand foot-lever; three washers under the crossbar keep it above the shaped plastic tailpiece; that crossbar is thick (7/8" OD x 1/8"wall) making that a very stiff/strong tube, aided by the fact that there's an oak dowel driven through it full length (originally to give me something to screw into to hold the strap in place for welding, it also serves to not let the tube deform, so it can't bend):

Again, the bar that appears to go to the passenger peg is the centerstand foot-lever; al angle at the top of the back-plate, top plate of plywood and bolts through the topcase and plywood visible here:

The bags, backing plates and al angle at the top are all exactly as I had the system mounted on the Connie, not 'optimized' for the Wee. If I end up liking the basic setup after this trip, I'll lower the topcase to touch the seat (flush with the top of the side-cases), eliminate the plywood and let the topcase pivot back to remove the seat if needed.

Just back from my trip to the Keys (3400 miles) and am happy to report that everything performed flawlessly. One long day in light rain outbound, one half day in heavy rain homebound and the cases were dry as powder kegs as I've come to expect from past performance. The mount was rigid and handling was just fine. Bottom line, no surprises at all on the road, just as we like it.

I ran in wet and dry from the mid 30's F and up, the heated liner and gloves with my Roadcrafter kept me quite comfortable the whole way.

I must say the Wee was better than I expected for the trip. Just lucky I guess but the seat was just fine for me - probably the best OEM seat since my '81 R100RS airhead BMW.

The L2 Wee is a definite "keeper" ..... Suzuki nailed it with this one, IMHO.
